If you dont have the ACT/GPA requirements entering freshman year at UTK, is it possible to receive it your sophomore year and on, or is it only given out your freshman year?
I would assume that, since your high school GPA and ACT scores will not change between your freshman and sophomore years of college, you are only eligible for the Volunteer upon freshman admission.
Does anyone know when the scholarship notification goes out?
My S received an email on Thursday that his letter re: Volunteer Scholarship would go out in mail on Friday. Additional scholarship decisions can be expected in the coming weeks. Our fingers are crossed. We are OOS.
We did receive an award notice for full OOS tuition. Hoping for further merit award. Anyone out there attending Honors Day this coming Saturday? Can’t wait for son to see UTk. In our top 3 at this point.
Full OOS tuition? That doesn’t sound very much like something UT would do, unless it was one of the Chancellor’s scholarships, of course
@ghman98, yes, full OOS tuition, but not full ride. This is Volunteer scholarship for 34 ACT. Still hopeful for some competitive, general and departmental awards. At Honors Day the mission for UTk to be a top 25 public university was emphasized, so UTk may have retooled the way they pursue high stat students. My S is a top 1% student. I would love for him to be NSD up there. I’m an AU alum, but deep Tenn roots in my family and UTk very impressive to us.
@WeSayWarEagle Ah, okay, I get it now, I just thought it was for $18k or something for the Volunteer OOS for 34-36 ACT. Good to know that they increased the amount though.
@ghman98, I misstated the the way the Volunteer Scholarship works for ACT 34-36. The amount is not full OOS tuition, but an $18K offset of the appx $31K tuition & fees (room & board roughly another 10K). Sorry for the error. As of today, FA stated that notifications still possible for general, departmental and I believe competitive scholarships and should be out by April 1.
@WeSayWarEagle That’s great to know, it’s taken long enough for them to get all the FinAid information out; all of the universities I applied to this year have gotten back to me already. Hoping they’ll be more generous with those departmental scholarships!
Can the Volunteer scholarship be combined with any other scholarships?
Yes. The Volunteer Scholarship is automatically awarded based on high school GPA and ACT/SAT test scores: http://onestop.utk.edu/scholarships/volunteer/. There are other scholarships that are automatically awarded based on your qualifications as indicated in your application: The HOPE Scholarship: http://onestop.utk.edu/scholarships/hope/, the Pledge/Promise Scholarships: http://onestop.utk.edu/scholarships/pledge-promise/, and the Provost Scholarship for NMFs: http://onestop.utk.edu/scholarships/provost/. If you are awarded one of these scholarships, it will be stacked with (i.e., given in addition to) your Volunteer Scholarship.
In addition to the automatic scholarships mentioned above, entering freshmen can still apply for the competitive Chancellor’s Scholarships: http://onestop.utk.edu/scholarships/chancellor/, which if awarded would also be stacked with any automatic scholarships. Additionally, competitive departmental scholarships may be awarded under appropriate circumstances; these are stacked as well.
