There’s no money towards tuition. Just the summer stipend. Which is a great thing though!
My daughter did get a postcard weeks back. Then we couldn’t find it so I wasn’t sure after I learned of the “likely” thingy if it was just that. I’ll need to look again.
Hello ALL: A little confused here…is the postcard an actual physical postcard through the mail or an email?
D applied RD. Also, does W&M have a portal like some other schools (VTech, etc)? My D says no. I guess we are waiting towards the end of March to know about acceptance…or not…
received a likely letter earlier this month and just checked my email and saw the acceptance!! I’m a James Monroe Scholar as well! Super happy!!!
@fairfaxgator Yes, the postcard is an actual postcard. And apparently some early notices went out for those accepted to the Monroe Scholar program.
Hi, my daughter received the Acceptance and Monroe Scholar program email today too.! We are from Illinois and were hoping for the William & Mary Scholars Scholarship (in-state tuition) might be a possibility. Wondering if anyone received that scholarship offer today or know anything about that particular scholarship.
S just got an email that he’ll be a Monroe Scholar. 3K for summer research project . Don’t remember getting a postcard
Never did find that post card. D18 checked her email this morning and found she was accepted with the James Monroe Scholarship as well. Very Happy for her…
I think we need to be careful what to call it. It’s not a scholarship. It’s a Scholars program. Doesn’t come with any merit money towards tuition. I’ve been talking to a friend who has a son at W&M and she said that the perks are great even if it’s not a “scholarship”.
Congratulations to the students receiving good news this week.
Monroe scholars can apply for a research grant for the summer after freshman year as well as a larger research grant for after sophomore or junior year. My daughter is already working with a faculty advisor on her chosen subject and is quite excited about this. Apart from the lack of air conditioning during an unusually warm September, she has been very happy to live in Monroe Hall, which is a good location on the Old Campus.
@lococollege the William and Mary Scholarship looks like it’s specifically for kids who have overcome adversity.
@prodesse so Monroe Scholars, including incoming freshman, live in Monroe Hall, which has no air conditioning? My email says resources for Monroe Scholars includes special housing option, can you tell me details?
@UGG2023 look it up on their website. All of the details are there. The benefit of the dorm is that it’s close to everything and might be a bit quieter than some of the other dorms. I think many of the dorms don’t have air.
Is there any housing benefit after the first year to Monroe Scholars? Also does the class registration benefit extend beyond freshman year?
@homerdog thanks I will look online. Has your S registered on the mywm site? I tried to register last night, got my user ID and created my PW, but when I went to log in, it said invalid login. Wasn’t sure if it takes time for the registration to go thru? Or just will have to call support
@UGG2023 He hasn’t registered. I have to be honest. He’s so busy with school and track right now and is still waiting on ten more schools so I don’t think he’s going to spend a ton of time investigating until he hears back from the rest. We are pretty sure we will go to the Admitted Students Day/Monroe Scholar Day because he liked W&M when we visited and it’s really different from most of the schools on his LAC-heavy list.
@J123D123 Those are good questions. I’d like to know too. It sounds like the kids are getting something snail mail with more details so I guess we should just watch out for that. The website does answer some questions and I’ve heard that the Monroe Scholar Day that’s the day after Admitted Students Day is really helpful.
@UGG2023 The Monroe Scholars aren’t required to live in Monroe Hall, but most do. People who have health conditions can apply to be allowed a window A/C. I read somewhere that some Monroe Scholars live in Taliaferro Hall (pronounced Tolliver). Some of the buildings are so old, the wiring can’t safely take the load of central air conditioning. But it does mean nobody can skulk in the dorm room for the first month! My daughter definitely bonded with her hallmates.
@homerdog I’m waiting on 11 more schools, just wanted to register, W&M is the only school I applied to that didn’t require me to setup a portal at the time I submitted my applications. The admitted students day is the same day as my prom, so I will be attending one on the revisit mondays instead…
Okay so I did not get a likely letter or the Monroe scholarship thing, my results should be coming out before April 1 right? I assume it does not mean I am rejected?
Actually before yesterday I had narrowed things down to approximately March 21st for RD and believed that is when D18 would hear something. Outside of additional outliers I would think around the 21st is a target date based or prior years.
