W&M Class of 2023 RD

Just received my acceptance email to W&M!!! I’m kinda confused tho because this is so early?? lol is this real plz help

Congratulations!

@living4memes where do you live? Also were you a Monroe scholar?

Waiting on the financial package to arrive… any out of state families out there – wondering if we have a shot at in-state tuition? She’s a Monroe Scholar too.

@lococollege those awards. (1693 scholarship i think they are called) already went out in early February.

I saw that in your earlier post…just wondering if there is any other hope for the out of state student…

@lococollege I’m not sure what you are asking. Those were the full scholarships. There aren’t any others.

@lococollege If you’re talking about merit aid, that was it. If you’re talking about need-based aid and how much W&M helps OOS students, I’m not sure but I wouldn’t count on some great package. Maybe someone else knows more.

We always assumed there was very little, if any, OOS merit aid. My understanding is that there is no merit aid associated with being a Monroe Scholar specifically, beyond the stipend. Unfortunate for us too, as it means W&M probably won’t make the final list because of it. Still anxious to receive the package however, so we can confirm and move on to decision making.

@Bluemarker , I read on this board about another school (Northeastern maybe) where the parents had received emails for additional financial info last week and even Monday, then their child was rejected on Thursday. Now keep in mind this was NOT W&M, but just something to consider. I know I would hate to get my student’s hopes up just to have them fall a couple of days later!

I don’t know why, but I have 3/29 on my calendar as W&M decision date. I must have seen that somewhere!!! Or maybe I just read “end of march” and guessed. BTW we are OOS and have heard nothing, no postcard etc. It’s a reach for my DS. Good luck all!

Son got postcard, admit letter, Monroe.

This is on the W&M website under Merit Based Awards for Freshman. Previously I’d looked at other information about Monroe and not seen anything about meeting financial need (we are OOS and other places on the financial aid website say typically only 25% is met through financial aid). I’m wondering if this is old information, new information or just buried on the one page for some reason. Anyone know? I bolded the relevant part.

"James Monroe Scholars
The James Monroe Scholars Program offers a $3000 summer research stipend to approximately 10% of accepted freshmen, empowering selected scholars to explore an academic area of their choice. Benefits to this program include a special housing option during freshman year, special consideration in the appointment of freshman advisors, priority course registration as an entering freshman and the invitation to take part in additional seminars. Additionally, both Virginia residents and out-of-state U.S. citizens or permanent residents typically have 100% of their demonstrated financial need met through our need-based aid programs. "

Monroe Scholars do not get merit aid directly. They do get 100% need based aid met through grants, loans and workstudy. Slight perk as it’s mostly loans and workstudy that adjusts need to 100%.

That’s interesting, I didn’t know Monroe Scholars got any kind of favorable financial aid treatment. As you say, it isn’t much.

Our 100% need level likely will be more than the maximum loans and work study they can offer. It will be interesting to see how much is grants. However, it’s not his first choice and first choice will probably be affordable so at this point I’m not stressing. I’d love him to have reason to take another look because I love W&M/Williamsburg and wanted to able to go there back in the day but my parents wouldn’t let me apply because it was “too far away”. But that’s me not S !

When do decisions come out? D19 applied, and it’s a big reach for her. Her stats aren’t great, so we’re nervous!

Do the decisions come out by mail or online?

@Whosthatgirl365 The decisions likely will come out next Friday, 3/22.

According to last year?

@Dhk138 No, according to this recent blog entry: https://wmblogs.wm.edu/admiss/overheard-committee-lets-see-mids/. Scroll down to the comments section.

Sorry if this information has already been posted but I see people asking the question. In the past results have come out by email starting around 5pm the day of release but some have not received them until 10 at night(maybe a server issue). If the email subject says “Good things” then you are in. If the subject line is “admission results” then you didn’t get in or are waitlisted. The email says

People say that good things come in small packages, but in college admissions, good things come in big envelopes. Consider this the small package, but something bigger is on its way.

Be sure to check your mailbox closely in the coming days.

Congratulations, and welcome to the Tribe!

Good luck to everyone this week.
