Okay so I applied to W&M early decision and I was just wondering exactly when and how applicants will be notified. As for the date, I've seen things ranging from December 1 to December 15, and the W&M website just says "early December." My other question is if W&M sends emails or posts decisions online or if they only send letters with their decisions. If anyone knows the answers to these questions, that would be great :)

I applied ED too! I’m pretty sure we will be notified on or around 12/1 ( first week of December.) They only send letters-- there is no online notification system. Good luck ashnape93! Fingers crossed for both of us :)

If you go back and search this forum, you’ll see that the letters are usually mailed on or just before 12/1 (last year it was 12/2), and that people have their results in the amount of time it takes a first class letter to get from Williamsburg to where they live. Here’s a link to one of last year’s ED threads: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-william-mary/809483-anyone-else-dying-slowly-waiting-december-1st.html

My d, from NY, heard on 12/3 in 2007. Good luck to all of the ED applicants (crossing fingers for you)!

We do not have an exact notification date as of yet for early decision but posters are on the mark with estimating that it’s around December 1 (it may be a few days later). Our web site and Facebook pages will be updated when notifications are released and how they are released. There is a possibility that this year our method of notification will change but nothing is set in stone.

Just check the Undergraduate Admission web page in early December for details.

A November 29, 2009 article in Flat Hat started with the statement:

“The College of William and Mary Office of Admissions saw a dramatic increase in early decision applications this year, causing administrators to examine the role of early decision at the College.”

What were the results of any “examination” of the role of ED?
How many ED applications were received this year?

I was wondering if anybody knew whether the letters are sent to your permanent address or your mailing address? I wonder about this since I am a student at boarding school (with my mailing address as the school’s, and my permanent address as my parents’ house). Will my parents have to tell me the decision via telephone, or will I receive the letter? Thanks!

What is the proposed change in the notification system? Will it delay notification at all?

Let me try to address the past few questions that have been posed.

1) W&M examines its early decision policy every year to ensure that it not only aligns itself with with admission and College objectives but also to ensure that is the best practice for all applicants. No major changes were made to our early decision policy between last year and this year although our acceptance rates during early decision have increased over the course of the past several years. This year’s early decision cycle appears to be very similar to last years.

2) Our early decision applications this year appear to be very similar to last year’s.

3) We send any mailed communication regarding an applicant’s admission decision to the mailing address.

4) As for notification, we are choosing not to release any details regarding method at this time until we know for 100% certainty how we will notify applicants so that we do not give out any misinformation. However, any changes we make will not change our decision notification timelines.

Again, check the Undergraduate Admission web page and Facebook/Twitter pages for updates. When decisions are released, the information on how they were released and when will be posted.
