W&M Transfer Chances

Hi, I’m currently a Sophomore at Virginia Tech and would like to transfer to W&M (and UVa, though I’ve come to terms with the unlikeliness of receiving an acceptance letter from them). I am majoring in Math.

HS GPA - 4.02 Weighted; Unweighted Unavailable
SAT (from 2015): 2040 (Reading 720, Math 650, Writing 670)
SAT II: Literature 700, Math 1: 670, Math 2: 660 (I’m debating whether or not to even include this because I consider them dismal as a Math major, though perhaps they aid in my dismal Math score on the SAT I?)
AP Scores:
Calc AB 3
Lit 5
French 4
US Gov 3
World His 3
Lang 5
US His 5

My Cumulative College GPA is 3.51 which I realize is just barely making the cut. I currently have 62 credits, not including those of this semester or the next.

I am currently studying abroad in France for two semesters. I have become fluent in French, and hope that this can aid my case. However, for various reasons that would be unnecessary for me to recount, my first semester grades are dismal. Dismal being an understatement: I likely failed every class. Furthermore, due to the strange ECTS system, I’m not even sure if I’m going to receive any credit for the entire semester. However, I have acclimated to my environment and will not fail so deeply and pitifully next semester. Luckily, these grades do not count toward my GPA as they are transfer grades, but they will, much to my embarrassment, appear on my transcript.

At Virginia Tech, I am a member of:
Sigma Alpha Lamda (honors society)
Woman Space (feminist club)
Cercle francophone (French club)
Teach for Madame (teaching French in local elementary schools)

In France, I am a member of:
Rock climbing club
Speak 14 (teaching English in local secondary schools)

Despite the lows and in respect of the highs, do I have a chance of making it in?

Thanks for your help.

Transfer admissions are always more difficult than freshman admissions. You need to give them a reason to accept you beyond just “I want to leave my current school/I would prefer going to your school.” If you can provide that compelling reason, then you’ll have roughly a 40 to 50% chance of being admitted. Otherwise, it’ll be closer to 25 to 35%. And I don’t think you could make the case to W&M that their math major is better than VT’s.

At William & Mary the acceptance rate for transfer admissions rate is actually higher for transfer admissions than freshman admissions, although that may be in part due to the guaranteed transfer admissions that exists between them and different schools. But I do agree that getting down to the core of “Why William & Mary?” is important. For William & Mary, I feel like character and passion is greatly important for the school, whatever that may be in. Their supplemental question for freshman during the past few years has usually been some variant of “What makes you colorful?”

Does anyone know when is the transfer decision day?
