W on Transcript

I was wondering what kind of effect a mark of "W"/withdraw on your transcript has (not only when applying for research, internships, etc. within the USC community but also for grad or law school?) if it's during first semester freshman year, it's not for a class required towards your major, and it's the only one on your four year transcript? Thanks!

A “W” doesn’t look good on a transcript, but it looks a bit better than a “D” or an “F.” If you are getting a “C,” you are MUCH better off with the “C,” and you should NOT drop the class. As you say, a “W” first semester freshman year won’t get a second look by the time you are applying for graduate school - just be sure you use this as a learning experience: The MOST important date on the registration calendar is “Last day to drop without a W.”

An important note if you have a USC merit scholarship (I am remembering that you interviewed for one?): For Trustee and Presidential scholarships you must complete 32 units/year with a **3.0 **or higher to maintain your scholarship. If dropping a class brings you down to 12 units, you will have to take 20 units next semester (and do well in them) to maintain your scholarship - that would be very tough. If it brings you down to 14 you will need 18 units Spring semester. [USC Trustee & Presidential Scholars](http://www.usc.edu/student-affairs/arp//renewal.htm) If at all possible, try to meet with your instructor to discuss if there is any way you can pull your grade up to a “C” by December.

One more note: Students receiving need-based financial aid must maintain at least 12 units per semester and a 2.0 GPA.

Good luck!

Thank you so much! I really appreciate your help.

I wouldn’t suggest you having a "W’’ on your transcript because it will show up on your transcript and professional schools don’t like Ws. I would rather get a “C” than a “w” as buddhabelly mentioned.

Good luck on your choice!!! If you have any questions, let me know :)
