Will having 1 W on your transcript affect your chances of getting in to a school?

One W is not that big of a deal.

Don't worry about what you can't change - focus on now and the future.

Make sure not to get more. Two is pushing it. Three or more will definitely be suspicious.

One is okay. I'd worry if there are three.

I took one class in the fall only and 1 more during the winter mini. I'm concerned that the school that I am applying to will think I'm a lazy ass...which is far from true. I was overseas and did not come in time to register for the classes that I needed...they filled up to capacity. In spring however I'm going to take 13 credit hours. Should I tell the admissions director this or should I send a copy of my spring 2007 semester schedule to the school asap?

where are you applying?

yes, you should tell them why you only took 1 class in the fall. taking classes in the winter mini or summer is not required or expected of students, so I don't think they'll care how many classes you took then...

I'm applying to Loyola University and Depaul University in Chicago.

and brand_182 can you please elaborate???

um I dunno can I? :D

I'm not sure what else to say, other than you should explain it to them. It sounds like you've got a good reason (being out of the country). I don't think Loyola or Depaul will hold it against you.

What about 1 "W" for a "top 10" program?

I certainly hope not, since I've got a W and am applying to top universities.

I think the rule holds for pretty much all schools. 1 W is ok. 2 is pushing it. 3 will draw attention and warrants an explanation.

Obviously, try not to have a 'w' ...

yes, but i did, so does that cause an automatic no for top 10 programs?

No (10 char)

What school do you go to? If you attend a CC and get a W on it... Even if I were an admissions officer, I would have a hard time convincing myself it's okay to have one...

I go to a CC and have a W on my transcript.

If it helps, my friend was accepted to UT-McCombs, Rice, and Georgetown last year. He too had a W on his transcript. I really don't think one is that big of a deal.

And to tell you the truth - if a school is going to deny me admission or think less of me because I have one W on my transcript, I wouldn't want to go there anyways.

Uhhh... I have two Ws on my transcript (granted, it is Bio and Bio lab), and I was admitted at Georgetown, Rice, and UChi.

Thank you Nspeds. Now the debate is over. :)

nspeds, you are the man!

Yes, but it's people like the previous poster that make me nervous. What if someone like that is on the admissions committee? I mean, it's nerve-wracking...Notre Dame admission officers might think like them and that's what I'm afraid of.
The semester I had a "W" I had 13 credit hours and received an "A" in all the other courses. I withdrew from the class because I had no choice; when your family needs the extra time for financial reasons, you get a job and drop the class you don't need...no questions asked. But then you don't want to bring the "W" up and just hope that they aren't going to hold it against you.

Well, my W was in my first (and only) online class. Worst experience ever as I found that I cannot motivate myself to read 40 pages from a Financial Accounting book every night without going to an actual class as well

I really don't think admissions officers are that ignorant. If you really want to feel better about it, make note in the "extra info" section as to why you have that W.

I have 11 and have talked to many many...probably around 30+ universities about how they will look at W's for transfer, and the conclusion is that do not care, or that they do not care if there is a valid reason. UC schools dont care period. W's will not be looked down upon, they actually wont look at them at all. Wisconsin would like a reason, they are very lenient. Minn doesnt care. ASU doesnt care and i can go on.

There was a previous poster here with i believe 13 W's and 1 F that got into UCLA without any problems.

Only problems i ran into were with private schools like BC and USC
