My daughter has been wait listed at University of Vermont. It was her first choice. Any thoughts on what her chances of actually getting accepted. I am thinking she should just write it off. But would like to hear if anyone has any suggestions.

I would concur with your inclination to move on, considering last year’s University of Vermont waitlist stats:

2010-2011:
Number of qualified applicants offered a place on waiting list 3176
Number accepting a place on the waiting list 982
Number of wait-listed students admitted 11

Thanks for the information. Where did you find these numbers?

From the CDS common data set that most schools publish on their websites:

[Common Data Sets : UVM Reports : University of Vermont](<a href=“Office of Institutional Research and Assessment | UVM Office of Institutional Research and Assessment | The University of Vermont”>Office of Institutional Research and Assessment | UVM Office of Institutional Research and Assessment | The University of Vermont)

There’s no hard or fast rule. If staying on the WL, with a slim chance of being called later doesn’t encroach on her ability to really give her heart to the school she accepts, then, why not? She can always decline UV later if it gets to that point. Just a matter of personal preference – some want to put behind WL schools – that’s fine. Some aren’t bothered at all.

Go on the waitlist, but then forget about it and focus on the choice you make. If it comes through, fine. With those odds, it doesn’t look good at all.
