The posting of the statistics for wait listed admits is inaccurate - what is listed as 2009 is actually the data for 2008 (when 59 students were admitted). According to an article in the Yale Daily News, in 2009 only 7 students were admitted off the waitlist due to a higher than expected yield.

^Ah, you’re right. Actually, all of my years are one off since I didn’t notice that the latest CDS available was for the 2008-2009 academic year, not for students entering in 2009. The numbers themselves, however, are still published by Yale, available on Yale’s website for all to see, so they should be correct. So:

Sorry about that :o.

Quick question about waitlists.

If someone accepts a waitlist position, and they get in, are they obligated to attend the school? My first thought was no, but I’m just curious.

No, although some colleges give students who are offered a spot off the waitlist a very short time to make the decision.

Did anyone find out where to send the letter to? I tried calling, but their offices are always closed when I’m awake.

^Do you live really far away? I remember I used to have to call Cambridge at the most awkward times.
I called, and they said to just send them to the admissions office. They also gave me a fax number though, and the name of my regional admissions officer. But I was too freaked out to ask too many questions.

I live in CA and their office hours occur when I have school. I’ll try e-mailing my alumni interviewer to see if I can get any info. Thanks for the help Millancad!

I think I’m going to have a 2nd interview. Maybe.

I was waitlisted for Yale school of music back in 2008. On top of that, I was told that I’m the first one on the list so I might actually make it. Alas, no one turned down their offer and they ended up taking zero candidates from the wait list. Yup, this still haunts me today.

For 2013, Yale was scrambling in the summer. Many more people accepted than they predicted. They resorted to even contacting all the admitees who had inquired about taking a gap year to open up more space. They really shoe-horned in those last seven for sure.

Anyone really trying hard to get off the list?

trying hard, no. but i am putting in a decent effort as i really liked yale and though the school i will be going to is great i just feel like more is there for me in a larger more urban school like yale.

Bluecoast, Mind defining “decent effort”?

i’m sending in my latest research paper. and i’m hoping to win something at ISEF to give to yale.

I’m hoping our quiz team wins state next week. We qualified for it relatively easily this Saturday, but I had to leave for rehearsal before the last match so I don’t know if we are going as first or second in the region. It’d be nice it we did well at Nationals (different style of competition, so we’ve already qualified) at the end of May too.
Besides that, I am re-interviewing/having an “interview style conversation about Yale.” And I’m sending Yale a handwritten letter on updates and stuff, which is taking forever. I messed up on the very bottom of the third page and I was like “correction tape or rewrite the page?” Huge internal debate.
Depending on how the performance of my piece to Liszt’s La Campanella goes, I may send that to Yale, since I choreographed it and taught it and lead rehearsals and made the costumes and whatnot. I think that shows leadership and creativity.

I do not mind. Decent effort as in writing a letter with updates and maybe seeing if my guidance counselor can find anything out

Hmm interesting… :)

How much weight do you think Yale will put in ISEF awards? If a student in my school is going to Yale, does that hurt my chances of being taken of the waitlist?

Oh, I love La Campanella! I particularly enjoy Yundi Li’s performance posted on YouTube.

^What a coincidence; I’m actually using a recording by Yundi Li! It’s lovely, but coming up with choreography for the flourishes drives me mad.
