Wait List.

I just received notification that I have been placed on the wait list for 2011. Yay, now I get to sit in perpetually wondering and misery until the third week of may at earliest. :)

Does anyone know anything about the wait list?

Wait list for what? Appointment to the Class of 2011 or to NASS?

wish I had an answer for you...didn't even know USNA had a "wait" list!

but at least limbo is better then a flat-out "no"...
so hang in......

would suggest you send in a "yes" response to your second-choice admissions offer....just in case USNA does not come through for you... so that you have a seat come Sept... the worse that can happen is that you loose your deposit (but that would mean the appointment as come through and what could be better than that!)

Best of luck!

I have been wait listed as well for an appointment. Anyone know how many they waitlist and can you find out what number you are?

Did your 'wait list' notification come in the mail as a thin letter? As phone call? On your web site?

I got a letter in the mail today saying that all of the applicants had been reviewed, and that unfortunately there isn't room for me at this time, but that I have been put on the "wait list." I have never heard of this either.

It goes on to say that if under 1200 people accept, my application will be further reviewed. I really doubt that is going to happen, so I am preparing for NROTC at The Ohio State University. The letter says to send in a deposit to my other schools and such.

Thanks for the information. Another option to look foward to getting in the mail. Good luck to you.

I remember reading some where that there are about a 100 kids wait listed. So there you recieve the late appointments. At least u know where you stand . We are still waiting !!! Good Luck!!

Where are you two wait-listers located? East or West coasts? Can you give us a word-by-word run down of what the letter basically says?

I've never heard of a wait list, but it makes a certain amount of sense and am somewhat surprised that one didn't exist. I agree that you should make plans to go somewhere else and, if this comes through, be happy.

Also, if you're this close and don't get the appointment, consider reapplying next year.

Hey, I got an appointment to the US Coast Guard Academy in February and today just got notice that I was waitlisted for USNA, which was heartbreaking news to say the least. The thing is, I've wanted to go USNA for years due to family tradition as Marines and several other reasons but USCGA is another truely outstanding school. Here's the problem: I have to accept/reject my CGA appointment before May 1st, but USNA says it will lets me know about my appointment status at earliest 3rd week in May. Does anyone know if I can temporarily accept my appointment to USCGA and, if USNA accepts me and I decide to go there instead, reject it even though it's past the deadline for the accept/reject? Is anyone else in the same boat as I?

im in the same boat, and yes you can accept the CGA appointment now and then decline if USNA comes through.

You may be causing someone else to not be able to get in because of that sort of situation. It could be like "quitting" during the year, essentially, but denying someone else a spot. So, think hard about that one.

A lot of this has been posted on the parents list serves for USNA. There have been examples of kids who were waitlisted last year, all ready to go off the civilian college with NROTC scholarships, off to USAFA, etc and got the call from USNA for the class of 2010. They changed their plans and arrived at the Academy for IDAY, with then USAFA or the other schools mentioned backfilling their spot from their wait list. This is how a wait list is supposed to work. It is done at civilian colleges; it is done at the Academies. The Academy tells suggests that you to go ahead with other plans yet will still call you if a position becomes available. Why would they do that if they felt it was somehow unethical to now tell Plan B that you are not coming? How are you denying someone else the spot if in the end they fill that spot from their waitlist? When they admit 1500 to fill a class of 1200 are they not expecting to have some no and no shows into the months of May and June?

If you are feeling at all unsure, tell USCGA that you are remaining on the waitlist for USNA. The paperwork from USNA for accepting the appointment asks that you inform any other institution to which you have accepted an offer of enrollment to contact that institution and let them know that you have now accepted USNA. It does not ask that you contact schools and withdraw applications or withdraw waitlist positions.

On the form that I received from the only school that I was waitlisted at – I was admitted at all other 7 schools including USNA – the wait list letter states “In the meantime make sure you commit to your first choice school among those institutions that have offered you Admission by May 1. All colleges do understand that students may remain on other institutions waiting lists and that some students may be receiving offers of admission after the initial May 1st deadline.”

Also, how do you think that quitting in the middle of the year denied someone else a spot? Do you not think that every candidate goes with the desire to make it to commencement 4 years later? Thing happen, people change, goals change, health changes…. I applaud everyone who has the guts/desire/ability to take this journey. I earned my spot if I choose to accept it. I did not take a spot from or deny anyone else his or her spot.

Add our name to the "Just got Wait Listed" list. April 6th thin letter from USNA in the mail today.

Wtih a May 1 date looming for backup plans, can any BG's confirm or deny that if you accept another SA Appointment on May 1, and then if USNA comes thru, back out of it?

BTW - does anyone have any OFFICIAL idea of how many get put on the Wait List? 100? 200? And is there real hope that most of these will get in, or is it 50-50, or just 10% etc?

Candidates have no obligation to any service academy until they take the Oath of Office. As I recall, there have been "no shows" on I-Day in the past. If a candidate accepts then decides to decline, the Admissions Office will offer the appointment to another deserving candidate from the Wait List.

Good to hear, but does this also apply when 'switching' (recieving late notification of appt. to USNA) from one service academy to another)?

I got a letter too. Did anyone else's letter request that you confirm your desire to stay on the wait list?

yep, and to send in recent grades.
