Wait listed at Vanderbilt class 2023

Stats: 35 ACT, 800 Math2, 800 Physics, 3.9 GPA, region: northeast usa

2 days

My daughter just got in from NY and I can tell you they have plenty from NY. So I don’t believe your theory is correct .

What is 2 days?

@Trixy34 someone asked how long the the kids have to accept the offer off the waitlist. They gave my daughter two days to accept

Peabody College

At this point I don’t think they’re looking at stats like GPA and ACT - if you’re in the middle range of 33-36, they’re probably looking more at continued interest and supplemental materials. For example, I was able to visit campus again and wrote my counselor about the class I shadowed and how I could see myself in that classroom. I also wrote a LOCI to my counselor early April and explained that while I didn’t have many new leadership updates, I had been working a lot this semester and moving up in the ranks at my job (which is related to my intended major). From there, I got an amazing letter of rec from my boss and I believe that made the difference. I also got one from my high school coach, who has seen me in various leadership positions and recently hired me as a coach alongside him. Didn’t hurt that both of their letters were directed to Vanderbilt Admissions, which told Vandy I’m seriously interested in them. So my advice is to show a TON OF interest and unique things you can bring to Vanderbilt, be it enthusiasm or determination or a skill you have. Good luck! Hope to see you all in Nashville this fall!

I agree that showing interest makes a difference in getting off Vandys waitlist. S19 has two friends who were offered admission yesterday. Both sent peer recs as well as LOCI and an additional letter from a teacher who did not write one originally.

@vickyvic1 - thanks. Yes, that was before I saw the email.

Showing interest is definitely important. My son wrote an LOCI about a week after decisions came out and also got an email yesterday. So, if you’re still interested in Vandy and haven’t yet written to your AO, it can’t hurt to do so now. @co23f44 's advice is fantastic. Tell them why you want to be at Vanderbilt - if you have a specific thing you can point to that drew you in, include it in the letter. Tell them how you have grown since your initial application and what you intend to contribute to campus. And tell them you will attend if accepted.

Congrats to all who got in! Does anyone know when the next round will come out?

Also, do the amount of spots offered in the next round depends on how many people accept their spots in this one?

Got in. I received an email yesterday. Congrats to everyone who got in.

To the people who got in yesterday - what have your financial aid packages been like? Have they been generous, adequate, or have they offered you very little in the way of financial aid (or nothing at all)?

Here’s some info on FA for waitlist admits. (Can’t speak to actual numbers, since we’re still waiting
)

In 2018 the Admissions blog included this note on FA:

If I am admitted, will I still be eligible for financial aid? When will I find out about my financial aid package?
Although we do reserve the right to be need aware when admitting waitlisted students, those who are admitted and have applied for need-based aid will still receive 100% of their family’s demonstrated need, completely loan free. Students admitted off the waitlist are not eligible for merit scholarships.

In 2019 (a few weeks ago) they posted a “True and False” blog for waitlisted students, including this info:

I won’t receive financial aid if I’m admitted off the waitlist.
FALSE. All students who are admitted from the waitlist will receive the same need-based financial aid award as if they had been admitted in an earlier decision round. If you’ve completed all required financial aid documents, you’re all set.

I can still apply for merit aid if I’m admitted off the waitlist.
FALSE. All merit aid recipients have been notified of their awards.

how to apply for housing? or is it auto enrollment, since freshmen are required stay in Commons?

@Waitlisted & Waiting - our “financial aid” was non-existant. They seem to have either somehow taken a look at the non-custodial parent’s financial info, which is not their policy, or just decided to extend a full freight offer assuming we would come up with the $$ somehow.

My financial aid package was better than expected - a little under the calculator that Vandy has on their website. My parents and I were blown away at how much they gave us, and true to their word it’s all in grant.

My daughter received exceptional need-based financial aid, all in grants, from Vanderbilt. Better than the already good aid her sister was offered at U Penn. And if you get National Merit they will tack more merit aid on top of the already good grant package. All that said, don’t expect this to be cheap if you are upper middle class and up.

@trixy34 If there’s a mistake in your financial aid call them immediately to let them know.

Vanderbilt does indeed meet 100% of financial need. They don’t randomly pause that policy to try and get more tuition.

@2023dadofthree , unfortunately national Merit finalist or any other merit scholarship(other than the full tuition/full ride ones) will not help if you are getting any need based aid. It will cut into the need based aid. We found out this hard truth at Vanderbilt and Emory. A bit disappointing, but it is what it is. We are going with our in state college UF, which gives full rides to national merit finalists.

@Trixy34 Did they ask for non-custodial info? I’d wondered about that caveat of “sometimes” needing non-custodial tax info.
