Anyone have any idea how many people they waitlisted, and how many they usually take from the wait list? The letter says they take "a number of students each year" but that's kind of vague.

From Vanderbilt's 2008 common data set:

Number of qualified applicants offered a placed on waiting list 3109
Number accepting a place on the waiting list 1390
Number of wait-listed students admitted 202

I actually think you will see a much higher proportion of waitlisted students eventually getting accepted. Vandy's applications were significantly up this year and I think a larger percentage of those applications were from Ivy types just applying as a semi-safety. I have already seen lots of people saying they are accepted with near perfect SAT's, but most appear not to be attending Vandy. Therefore I think the rate from accepted students will be much lower this year and the waitlist is actually an ok place to be.

wow..
for some reason, though, i feel like they waitlisted a TON more this year than last year...especially because of the increase in applicants.. don't know how it will turn out! hopefully positive!

I think that increase in waitlisted people is due to what I just mentioned. A much lower percentage of Vandy acceptances this year will actually go to Vandy than in past years. Many of those accepted are the type who apply and get into 8 of the top 20 schools or so. The type that uses Vandy as a safety if you know what I mean.

I believe the reason for the increase in waitlisted students if due to housing. The Commons has only so many rooms - if more students accept than Vandy expects, there won't be enough room for all freshmen in the Commons. Vandy is not going to let that happen. Waitlisting is a really good way to manage that.

It's probably the tuition, too. People who didn't get the Cornelius thing are less likely to attend.
