Waiting for Decisions - Penn State Class of 2024

My guess that they will post acceptances today that night go in for the midnight update. Only a guess though. Maybe look at last year’s acceptances and see if any were received on Thanksgiving morning.

Son just told me that two more of his friends have been accepted to UP. That makes four of his friends from our instate High School, three of which would be high stats and the other one would be med/high. He’s not sure which majors they applied to.

Happy Thanksgiving, all.

Do they email when the portal is uploaded?

No. Hence, the aforementioned “obsessive portal checking”

Whoo boy - I literally got chills at the mention of that name. But, good luck!!! I’m sure you will hear good news - at least you know the process better than most!

Does anyone know if UP has sent any denials yet, or do those get sent out later?

Based on previous years: sent out later. They focus on the clear admits for now. 3 weeks to go.

I’m starting to second guess whether DUS was right to apply to or if S20 should have just picked a major he kind of likes and went from there. With so many kids using DUS for a back door to more difficult majors, the pool isn’t necessarily an easy one.

Add in the later admissions decisions compared to a few of his friends with similar stats who have already heard, and I don’t blame him.

I know that it’s sometimes senseless to try to figure out PSU’s order or methods, but DUS has been glaringly absent from most PSU admissions decisions so far. ?

DUS is usually one of the later ones because people with borderline stats often apply DUS to improve their chances of getting in. Right now, it’s usually clear admits that are getting in. People with very high stats regardless of major are hearing now. It does seem that whoever in admissions is responsible for DUS admissions takes longer than other higher-profile majors, but also, keep in mind that College Confidential is a minuscule representation of what’s happening overall at Penn State admissions. Just because we don’t see it here, does not mean it’s not happening.

@oceanisle Don’t despair! While it seems like lots of kids have been hearing… there are lots of kids waiting. And some of those won’t hear until the very last day of EA. Last year’s EA/Common App was a bit of a black eye, so I think Admissions is trying to get ahead of the wave.

And not ALL high stats kids have heard either. I know some strong candidates who haven’t heard. And applied early. And are getting anxious. Sometimes things are random. I know kids with lower stats who have been admitted while kids with higher stats have not heard. Just be patient. (hard, I know!!!)

I would expect a strong wave the first two weeks of December after we get back from Thanksgiving. They know the EA pool now. And they know the Priority (due Nov. 30th) pool. So they will get a better sense of who falls into what. And two kids being equal (no one is ever ‘truly equal’) … I would hope the EA kid gets the nod.

(and fwiw, I have heard that Admissions updates the portal 2x/day - midnight and noon… so no need to check obsessively throughout the day. I know they were updating more irt closer to Dec. 24th/Feb. 1st last year, but I was told that is what they are

@MYOS1634 @lucyvanpelt @jlhpsu and any other veteran/experienced people who post here, I just wanted to let you know that it’s really appreciated. I’m a big fan of sharing knowledge and it’s really considerate of you to take the time to share some of yours with those of us who are trying to navigate a complicated process.

Thanks again to everyone!

I second @OceanIsle
All you veterans are so generous and thoughtful with your time. Thank you!

@OceanIsle and anyone else waiting for DUS both of my sons received acceptances on 11/26
I did post in This thread for one (other one couldn’t get into account until later) I will post in acceptances when we receive official letter
I will warn all, my current PSU daughter had higher stats (4.0 and 35 ACT) and received her acceptance on 1/26 (although there was no EA then plenty of students received their acceptances before she did)
So I never expected for them to hear so early. Please be patient (I know it’s hard). If you look at the older acceptance threads you will see students with all kind of stats get accepted at all different times. Also college confidential is not reflective of all acceptances-it’s just a nice way to find out a little info

My son last year heard around Jan 26. Just remember the class is around 8,500 plus last year DUS was accepting into May. Not everyone announcing acceptance will attend Penn State. It was stressful the past two years with both sons.

Do many kids get flat out denied? Don’t they offer your commonwealth campus choice? Also, if you’re coming from a high school with a lot of kids with similar stats would everyone get in or even if your stats meet minimums would you be denied if they meet quota for your hs? D20’s hs has a lot of kids w similar stats applying and I just wonder how admissions handles that.

My son applied two years ago from a small but reputable high school in Pa, all but one of the applicants from his school heard in the final week (which then was in January). Thinking the bulk of the decisions are held until close to the deadline. Some of these kids got summer start and others fall. The waiting is hard, but hold tight there many acceptances still to be released.

Most students will be offered a commonwealth campus if they aren’t admitted to UP campus. Flat out denials used to happen when they didn’t require a back up campus, but now they are accepted to the back up campus usually if not accepted at the University Park campus.

Thanks @jlhpsu that’s what I figured, but it’s hard to tell anything on Naviance, but maybe those were from before they required a back up campus. My D20 is within a bunch of green checkmarks and within mid 50% stats, but I’m just nervous that everyone else applying from her HS is as well.

Last year students could be reconsidered for DUS after a denial at the UP campus colleges. Most of who I know were able to negotiate summer start or fall into DUS

just checked portal this morning and D accepted for fall at UP. Good luck everyone!
