Waiting for the Early Decision

I'm new on this section of CC having son graduate HS 2010, hopefully, that's the plan at least. Now anxiously awaiting ED which is not expected until Dec. 15th but understand from my son that some, I should say one, has already received a positive reply. What's the scoop on all that? Are acceptances treated differently with respect to ED vs. EA? I've been very good in staying reserved throughout the whole process and not getting all worked up. Now have a week to go and I like to appear as calm as possible at home, without a worry or care in the world. Just hope for the best and prepare for the worse, so I say. Here I am on CC letting my concerns discreetly known and looking for insight. Has anyone else heard on Early Decision or Early Action? Can I be so bold to ask from where? Sorry if I'm in the wrong section, please guide me if need be, thanks.

It depends on the school. At this stage, a few people have heard from Early Action or Rolling Schools, because they promise quick decisions and it is nonbinding. Most early decision schools haven’t responded yet–sometimes their applications are not even due yet. A few, like William and Mary, issued decisions shortly after December 1. The school’s web site should give you good information–check “admissions” and then something like “dates and deadlines.”

Here is a list of dates to start with:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/822043-2009-early-decision-action-release-dates.html

Also, check the thread at the top of this page for acceptances - you’ll see who has heard already from which college.

Depending on the university, and sometimes the college within the university, ED dates can vary.

Schools handle this differently. Some with Dec. 15 ED notification deadlines send out snail mail postmarked Dec. 15. Some send out snail mail timed to arrive on Dec. 15, but obviously they don’t control the post office so some may arrive a little before or a little after that date. Some notify electronically, usually at a specified hour on that date. Some have other notification dates. Stay calm, and prepare yourself mentally for all possible outcomes—acceptance, rejection, or deferral to the Regular Decision pool. This is a highly stressful and emotional time for ED applicants. As the parent, it’s your job to model how to handle stress and good news or disappointing news gracefully.

What school is it? Some people here may know whether they send acceptances out before sending out rejections.

Best of luck. Schools vary greatly in when they send out ED and EA news. In addition, not all send out every decision at the same time–my son received his ED acceptance 4 days before his best friend did from the same school (What an awkward time that was!), probably because my son applied a few days earlier and his “batch” of applications was completed first.
I believe there are some threads on decisions coming in.

If you go to the link on CC for your son’s ED school, you might be able to get more information on who has received decisions and who hasn’t yet.

For William and Mary, the W&M page practically had NORAD tracking the path of acceptances, deferrals and rejections.

Cornell’s day is TOMORROW.
Think things are tense here?
I’ve spent the last several months (feels like YEARS) telling my kid that he’s perfectly qualified and able to do the work, and that he has a really nice fit and aptitude for the program he’s applying for … but so do a lot of other kids. My psychic analysis says deferral, because I think they will want to see first semester grades in full.

Good luck to your son, cnp55. Hope he gets good news.

Kids going through Questibridge got their acceptances for the ED/EA round already, last week IIRC.
