Waiting for UMich?

Hi guys, I have a huge problem and I need your help.
I'm sure that the 15th of March will be a big day for some of you since some universities and colleges will release their decisions( hopefully Umichigan will be one of them).
Last month, I was accepted as an ED 2 NYU international applicant, which was unexpected( I'm not a strong applicant). However, my program was changed, so my admission became non-binding. Basically I can choose to accept or decline the offer. Here's the problem:The decision is by this Friday, which is the 15th but I'd really like to hear from UMich first.
So, I have 2 'theories':
1) go to nyu and find out to be accepted in umich, then regret my whole life
2) decline nyu offer and get rejected from umich, also regret

What do you guys think?

Well, what’s your backup if #2 happens? If you’re “not a strong applicant” i think you should be content with NYU

Honestly, I would call/email NYU and ask for an extension. Legally in the United States, colleges have to give you until May 1st to decide. Especially since NYU is non binding, you should have till then so I would call them. i know in the music world, some schools send out letters asking you to respond before May 1st when some of your schools may yet to respond. Legally, these music schools have to give you an extension till the National day of May 1. I would imagine the same rule applies for NYU. Good luck!

If you “aren’t a strong applicant” you won’t get in Michigan anyway so don’t mess up the NYU acceptance.

When they say ‘by 15 March’, do they also include the 15th? can I accept the offer at the end of the day?

I second wpgm51’s suggestion. Tell NYU to give you an extension. I would recommend Michigan over NYU. As a current student, I can tell you a vast majority of the undergraduate student body here doesn’t take their academics seriously. Michigan will provide a better experience and a better education.

@wpgm51 and midtasuggs
Thank you for your advice!
I have just sent an email to nyu admiss officer!
Now I’m afraid it’s too late since the deadline is this Friday. I never considered it before because I didn’t thought an extension was possible.
Now I think I’ll have to wait for a response

Mistasuggs, you wrote:

" I would recommend Michigan over NYU. As a current student, I can tell you a vast majority of the undergraduate student body here doesn’t take their academics seriously. Michigan will provide a better experience and a better education."

Obviously you may be right and most everyone on this thread would say, but what are you in particular as a NYU student basing this on? How do you know (yet) that Michigan provides a better experience? And what drew you to NYU in the first place?

Were you offered FA at NYU, and do you expect any aid at Michigan? I’m sure you applied ED to NYU knowing your financial situation, but since you are no longer bound to attend, I think it’s only fair that they let you compare FA aid offers, if that applies.

What drew me to NYU was a half-ride merit scholarship and a particular distaste for UC Berkeley(as those were my two options).

I came here to study Math-Econ because it’s widely lauded(at least at the graduate level). My math-econ classes do boast some intelligent people, it was immediately evident in my other classes/clubs that this was not the norm. In fact, some of the essays I’ve read written by fellow NYU students in the Writing The Essay classes were painfully bad. So bad as in, they couldn’t construct coherent sentences.

Trust me, save your money and go to Michigan.

COLLEGE UG - there is another option you have not considered that is perfectly acceptable if you handle it correctly. What’s critical is handling it correctly.

GO AHEAD AND DEPOSIT RIGHT NOW IF THAT MEANS PRESERVING YOUR OFFER (ASSUMING THERE IS SOME AID TIED TO IT). You can “rescind” your acceptance later if you are accepted to Umich.

What you cannot do, ethically and without expecting negative repercussions, is DUAL DEPOSIT. So IF you’re accepted to UMich, BEFORE you deposit at UMich, you FIRST rescind at NYU. They will not refund your deposit, but it is a small price to pay to keep that option and whatever aid is involved in play.

I’m saying this in part because NYU can be tardy or sometimes disorganized in its communication with people – so if you don’t hear back tomorrow about an extension, I wanted you to know there is a legitimate way to proceed. Best wishes!

if you can afford nyu or u mich, you can afford to get a phone card, call nyu on the phone and get an answer. I like kmcmom’s suggestion but I’m not sure if your ed2 offer becomes binding if you accept it.

my s was considering nyu but after visiting decided to take it off the list due to lack of a coherent campus. Here are a couple of observations about nyu:

the school enjoys a great reputation for nyc employers.

however expensive you may think it is, add $10k.

we’re visiting ann arbor next weekend.

Some choose NYU because they love the idea of NYC being the campus. NYU says it’s in and of the City. It appeals to some.

^yes, only deposit if you have in writing that because they changed the program it’s non-binding now, the same way your acceptance is non-binding!
With your decision being non-binding now, they truly should be adhering to giving you until may 1st, but when scholarship money is involved, they can set their own deadlines for acceptance of that part of the offer.
