This message keeps on showing on my tracker:

Your application is complete and is currently under review. Admission decisions are sent on a rolling basis. All students who submit complete applications by the December 15 priority deadline will receive their decisions by the end of February. Students whose complete applications are submitted after the December 15 priority deadline will be considered on a space-available basis after that time.

It was "complete" like last year and it's been "currently under review" for more than a week.
When are they going to make their decision?!? Unless of course I was rejected on the spot.

I go to a huge feeder school to the U of M, and “rumor has it” that if you have that status, you have already been denied and they will mail you the rejection at the end of the month.

I also know kids who applied after the deadline (on the space-available basis) who were accepted in the last week, so I really hate to say it, but seeing how they’ve moved on to the space-available group, I think everyone who applied before 12-15 who will be accepted has already found out.

Don’t take my word on it though. We’re all just as confused as you are.

brekfastchampion, if what you are saying is right, I think it is very cruel for U of M to do this even if it was only for convenience. There is such a thing as saying “you are denied” right on the status right?

^ I really don’t know =/. I was personally denied in December, and my status is “under review” right now. I’m THE only person I know that’s been rejected. And It was kind of my backup too…

personally? Do you mean in the mail? In that case, it would at least explain why they didn’t change your status. Were you an in-state applicant and when did you apply?

^ my bad, “personally” was a bad word to use. And yup, I’m in state…just north of Stillwater. So like immediate metro area.

I applied in late August, and had EVERTHING in by like August 30th at the latest. On November 21st I got a small, thin, gold-colored envelope from the U that had one tri-folded paper in it that told me I was rejected and told me about transfer options and how competitive the class is this year and how they wish they could accept everyone but can’t blah blah blah. If important, stats were 3.6 GPA, Top 25%, 33 ACT.

Anddd the status is currently “under review.”

what was your major? to be rejected with your stats I can’t imagine what they must want…
DS is in same situation as the rest here, similar stats to Breakfast w/higher ACT, OOS, Eagle Scout and all, app. complete Sept. 8 - quite frankly this is ridiculous to still be waiting. With other colleges communicating better and showing the love, DS has totally taken UM off his list.

to top it off he has a friend with an ACT 7 pts. lower and mediocre GPA who has gotten in, albeit a different major, but still, he heard a long time ago.

^ if so, how considerate to do it at the expense of genuinely motivated students.

Can’t really imagine it’s Tufts syndrome here though, this just makes no sense. When I see his major with all acceptees at 4.0+ and 35+ ACTs then it will make sense. Right now this is totally not in line with the common data set.

This seems to be happening at several state schools this year, maybe an high increase in applicants due to the economy? D was lucky to be accepted at Ohio State, but there were several kids with very high stats get turned down. D was rejected at University of Florida with high stats, and saw several other students with better stats get turned down too. There are several students at her school here in Illinois waiting on letters from U of M. Might be disappointing if what you say is true regarding these kids already having been denied and will receive their letters by end of month.

@AL34: I just guessed. I’ve seen some accepted with high stats, and now, those who are rejected. Maybe this will result in some kind of rumor about the school, and attract more students with high stats, mislead them that the top schools are even more harder and they should lower their standards while choosing schools to apply, especially in time of economic crisis, etc.
The job of an admissions officer is like running a business; they are on a severe race of fame I guess, especially when it is UMN, and the sign is their amazingly low OOS tuition.
P.S.: No matter what the reason is, this is so ruthless.

This might be a guess but since I’m an international student and have been accepted to three public universities so far, it might be related to money =P

My stats were just on the edge with most other applicants so I don’t think I had such a big advantage besides being international.

oh i see. I sent my grades/transcript myself so it doesn’t show up on mine. I still have a bad feeling about getting a later than usual notification.
