My daughter had a letter posted on her homepage that she had been put on the waiting list for Fall 2009 early this week and now it is removed! She was deferred January 15 to March 20. Anyone else have this happen??

The letter indicated that if she accepted the waiting list, they would notify her by June 30.

Interesting.... my son was deferred, his original letter is gone, nothing in its place. At least we will know tomorrow around 5. I'm guessing they posted the letter early by mistake, but you never know....Good luck to your daughter!

Thanks, Innovative! My son was waitlisted. Instate! I really can't believe it....he was disappointed. I have to believe the caliber of the kids applying this year was unbelieveable, because his stats all fall into the middle of the middle 50% from last years class. 1260/1910 SAT, 4.4 GPA,7 AP classes, top 10%, 8yrs of competitive travel hockey, pres of a club, vp of another, I can't even go on... all I can say is I believe that whatever was meant to be will be. He has accepted a spot at NCSU in engineering , and if he is to be an engineer than this is where he belongs. He is happy with his decision, though he did have a few choice words for Carolina! lol

I got waitlisted, but i'm from new orleans, la so its a little bit more understanding. all of the other people i know applied early action and they got rejected straight away. this kind of stinks though because i feel like they were never able to actually make a clear decision about me! the first time i was deferred and now i'm waitlisted. make a yes or no decision UNC!!! my dad says this was the hardest school on my list simply because i'm not from North Carolina (i applied to Princeton, Wash u-accepted, and rice as well). I'm still pretty bummed, UNC was my top choice. but, if they are giong to make me wait until june 30...i don't think they really want m

I was waitlisted too (I'm from CT), but I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it. They haven't released any statistics yet on how many students were admitted from the waitlist last year or how many were even placed on it.

I do have a couple of friends who got off the waitlist at Duke and Emory, but IDK how it would work for UNC. I really like UNC but should I (or anyone else) get our hopes up?

If I remember correctly, last year a fair amount of students were admitted from the waitlist. Not a TON by any means, but a fair amount. Also, I seem to remember them notifying people by the end of May/early June. I was waitlisted but took my name off.

I noticed on the admission blog that they admitted 202 of the 2500 who were earlier deferred. 1685 of the deferred were waitlisted, the rest denied admission. The total offered waitlist was 2502. Of course not all will accept a position on the waitlist - I wonder how many will? I also wonder how many on the waitlist are OSS vs. ISS.... Not much hope, but at the same time - there is hope. Meanwhile, I am making plans to go to App State - go Mountaineers! Woo hoo to snow! Any others opting for ASU?

"I'm still pretty bummed, UNC was my top choice. but, if they are giong to make me wait until june 30...i don't think they really want me."

My OOS daughter with stellar stats was waitlisted last year and came off the waitlist on May 4. UNC was her top choice, so she didn't spend much time deciding what to do. As it relates to "being wanted," it really didn't figure in her thinking at all. Who cares if the admissions office doesn't make a big fuss over you - once you get to Chapel Hill, the ones who got in early vs. the ones who came off the wait list are all treated equally. No one knows or cares about all of that. The admissions people are done with all of the students by that time and are working on the next crop.

So if you come off the waitlist, which is very possible, your first consideration should be whether or not UNC is the best fit for you, not which school made the biggest play for you (unless we are talking scholarship money of course).

Is there any way to find out how many they accepted off the waiting list in past years? Are we talking like 100+ or is it like 20 total or something...

Also, the FAQ thing says they expect 500 in state and 500 out of state to accept positions on the waiting list. Thats less than half the 2500 on it, I would think more would accept the spot seeing as there's nothing to lose really but I don't know...

Number of applicants offered a place on waiting list: 2,328
Number accepting a place on the waiting list: 1,420
Number of wait-listed students admitted: 453

Meaning: ~32% of students accepting spot on waiting list were eventually admitted.

Historical info on prior year admission stats are all posted. Here's the link: Office of Institutional Research and Assessment - Common Data Set
Most universities post the similar info, google search college name + common data set.
Best wishes and good luck to all on the waitlist!

Schools are worried that their current statistical models of how many students will accept their offers of admission will not work too well, given the economy. (For example, more people might end up choosing to attend UNC-Chapel Hill over more expensive schools than the models would predict.) As a result, I would not be surprised if UNC-Chapel Hill is using the wait list extensively this year just to be safe.

does anyone know if the waitlist is kind of separated by OOS and IS? Like, if they have less in state kids accept than they want, will they choose another in state kid to fill the spot or is it just the best qualified candidate on the waitlist regardless?

Several people at my school got into UNC, and we're OOS. But I got waitlisted to WashU. Admissions is weird this year because of the financial crisis, so many colleges have long waitlists.
