Any thoughts about being on hold as of 4/23/07? We haven't responded yet to his backup school regarding deposits and such, hoping to hear something soon from USMMA, but daylight's a'wastin'. We don't want to call Admissions to pester them as his file is complete, not waiting on DODMERB or anything.

majmattmason, call and ask about timing. Perhaps they are waiting until May 1 to see who is and is not coming. If so, and a space were to open up, ask when they might let you know. You will not offend anyone. Try to talk to the regional admissions officer.
You hate to invest money on the #2 choice, but a small fee for a placeholder will be lost in the sands of time. Just be sure to send a nice note of regret when the USMMA acceptance comes through. #2 school will appreciate it and understand. That's why they have a waiting list.

They will be happy to help you.
We went to visit campus, and everyone was very helpful and considerate.
They know what you are facing, and asking them questions would not offend anyone I met. They want the best for each of the candidates.

In fact, everyone was up-front with what USMMA was, and was NOT. They want all the kids to make informed choices and have a great match.

PS. I was concerned with EXACTLY the same thing you are facing. It is imposing to call 'The Admissions Department'. However, it is staffed with wonderfully understanding PEOPLE.

Call. The worst you could ever get is a 'No'. But you will most likely get valuable information and a smile -- which will help you determine the course best for you.

I agree with the others, have always had great service from the admissions staff. It may carry more weight if the applicant calls vs. the parent - time permitting. There will be at least one primary slot opening up, I know one appointee who chose appt to the USCGA vs Kings Point last month. Very tough choice, but they are the ones who must make it. There will probably be many other folks who opt for other academies and schools by the May 1st decision deadline. Things will happen after that Good Luck.

Couldn't ya just scratch your eyes out with all the waiting? I feel for those who haven't heard. Son got his appointment on April 27 a few years ago. Thought I might throw that out there to let you know late appointments do occur. Keep the faith & hang tough a few more days.

my DS was an alternate on the morning of May 8th, but after lunch that day he was a principal canidate.

Before that he was on hold (but I don't remember the date of that changing to alternate, but I think it was sometime in April, maybe even late april)

so may advise is to keep checking their website for an update. I became obsessed with it, and checked almost hourly..... and that was before I found this website :)

Royce DM, you bring up another good point. USMMA seems to want candidates who enthusiastically want to be at Kings Point, all other qualifications being about equal. Typically, if a candidate has an very strong desire to get in, he or she will be very motivated to work hard and graduate.

maj: My son was in the same predicament in 1998 (arithmetic says that's nine years ago, but it seems like yesterday). We sent the deposit to his back-up college. As May came and went he became adjusted to the idea of going to the other school and as he gradually gave up hope that KP would come through, he started to get enthusiastic about his back-up school. He was taken by surprise when he got the call on June 18th, the day before his high school prom, that there was a place for him at KP. Three weeks later he reported for Indoc. with the class of '02.

If I had to do it again, I would do it the same way. The small amount of money we lost was saved many times over by his going to KP. If he had not been picked up by the academy, he would have gone to a school he liked and would have done well at. Now that he's in the Navy the watchword is "Semper Gumby" (Always Flexible). Keep your options open.

As far as pestering the admissions office, throughout the Spring he did so on a regular basis. He would show up at the office and ask if he was in yet. The secretaries would tell him that he would know as soon as they knew. I think he thought that he was showing his determination and that it might help nudge him over the top. We never learned if it was a help, a hindrance, or had no effect at all.

My son was made an alternate in late April, a year ago...time sure has flown. I found out that he was moved to principal on May 2...that is a big day. The deadline for anyone with an appointment to accept or decline is May 1 . I did not tell him of his good news, until the letter came...Wanted to see his face. It was awesome...keep the faith, my fellow Georgian...

We discovered on the website our son's status changed on Wednesday from Alternate to Principal and the letter came in on Thursday. Yes, the waiting is tough. Our son had faith, far more than we did.

WELCOME ! Could not agree with you more! From the wise words of Jamzmom watch out for those ceiling fans and low lights as you jump for joy! Yeah.. you know what we're talkin' about!

For all us parents...let's remember to breath on this roller coaster ride as we anticipate arriving at the top.

Are you going with your son to Indoc? If so, get those reservations soon. If you like, PM your son's IM screenname and I will forward to my son.

AWESOME news! I remember my day that it changed to Principal like it was yesterday.... oh wait, it was only one year ago.... hahahahahhahahahaha

Accept the offer from USMMA or sign onto this forum? He awaits the final tally from USMA, but is probably going to go with USMMA from the response and big fat smile on his mug.

Also a point of clarification, while my screen name is MajMattMason, I am not trying to imply or suggest that I am or was a Major in any branch of the service. I've used that screen name for years on other various forums and based it off of the action figure I had as a child. It's caused some pretty funny PM's from folks here on College Confidential. While we do have a strong representation in my family in the military, sadly, I did not serve.

Well THAT didn't take very long. Son received the appointment letter today. When he got home he read it, signed it, faxed it and put the return letter back in the mail. And that is that. He'll be there July 5th.
