waitlist--any hope?

I think mathwiz is still waiting for MIT.....not sure tho

I'm excited about Olin, but I've decided not to decide between Olin and MIT until I hear if I get in.

Decision must be very difficult: "me wents to think and me thinks that Olin are me places." Either way, it should be win-win - good luck!

I am dying to go to MIT and will turn down my full scholarship at Cal if I get in FOR SURE

cawaiigirl- both are excellent schools. Interesting to read about the decision-making process: mathwiz wrote a java program comparing caltech and olin and it seemed olin was the place. You're willing to forego a full scholarship to Cal....MIT obviously exerts a tremendous force on the process doesn't it? But at the end of the day, you're in a win-win. Good Luck!

Well, mathwiz, I really hoped you'd choose Caltech :( :)
But in any case, good luck! (And thanks - you never know whose spot went to who)

I called them this morning and they told me to call back in the end of this week or next week.

Has anyone here ever spoken to an admission officer on phone? I always asked them if I could update my file by phone and talk to an admission officer but they always said no. However, I met this guy who claimed that he was able to talk to an admission officer through phone for several times.....

Hriundeli, for a while I thought I would pick Caltech too. It had been my number one for several years... I know I'll sometimes regret not going to Caltech, but the same thing would have happened if I turned down Olin. Caltech's a great school and you're gonna have lots of fun there.

So any news?

Matt's blog entry from today says there's no news yet. http://www.mitadmissions.org/topics/misc/miscellaneous/in_the_south_for_prospective_s.shtml

The Tech today says that the yield is 69% this year, with 1053 yes-replies so far and a few replies still not received. Stu Schmill told The Tech that the class size target is 1070, so it seems possible a few will be admitted from the waitlist. The Tech article says there are almost 500 on the waitlist.

Record yield, though they planned for it and thus will look to be going to the waitlist this year.

That being said, they said they will be only taking a few from the list this year.

On an unrelated note, the record yield flies in the face of the trolls who have been swarming around as of late...

Why would they say in March that the targeted class size is 1020 and now they are saying 1070. That is quite the difference in the number of students they are trying to enroll. I wonder why the last minute increase?

Does anyone know the number of students in the Class of 2010?

I think they slightly increase the number of student they enroll this year because they found more dorm room space or something like that.

: ( The yield this year is still so high. It seems like there is a very slim chance that I can be accepted. Please please let a miracle happen!!

If they 'found more dorm space' by simply cramming more beds into the existing dorm rooms- that is not a solution. They had an overcrowding problem a few years ago and it seems strange they want to repeat it.

They announced in March they were hoping for a class size of 1020 students, and they currently have 1053 enrolled. It seems like they are already overenrolled by 33 students.

hm...I thought they took some space from grad. school dorm or something like that
but I am not sure though
If they are overenrolled already, why would The Tech say they are shooting for a class size of 1070?

We are not overenrolled and we are going to the waitlist.

They said many times in that article that they did not want crowding to happen, so I'm sure they wouldn't go to the waitlist if there were already crowding, and we are going to the waitlist!

There are many factors that influence the number of undergraduate beds available. By now, MIT knows which upperclassmen will be returning to dorms next year and which will be moving to FSILGs -- if a few more students chose to move to apartments or FSILGs than usual, more spots could open up for freshmen.

... so what exactly is going on?

i'm curious--what is pledging like these days? Is it still at least a semester-long? Do people live in the houses while they are pledging? Also, what semester do they pledge?

Officially, fraternity rush is about a week after dorm rush -- approximately the first week of school. The first year (or two years?) of FOC, fraternity rush was held a little later (2-3 weeks into the semester), but fraternity members had a hard time trying to do the school + rush thing, so for the past few years, rush has been earlier.

Pledges don't officially live in the houses while they're pledging, although sometimes you wouldn't know it by the amount of time they spend sleeping in their dorm beds. ;) The frats are careful to look like they're abiding by the rules, but everybody just kind of quietly flaunts them.

For a while, it looked like a few of the fraternities would succumb to financial troubles, and a few of them have had off-and-on problems recruiting enough pledges. In the past 2 or 3 years, things seem to have leveled out, though.
