I know I sound like a nervous reck, but last year they started admitting people by the 9th. The year before, they knew they wouldn't go to the waitlist by the 10th. Arggghhh! We've had to wait at least an extra 3 days! THREE WHOLE DAYS!!!!!!!!!!!

Basically MIT is increasing class size in the next few years as the new dorm comes online (to 1100 per class, or 400 new undergrads total). They realized that it would be good to smooth the transition a bit instead of doing it all at once, so they added 50 this year. As of Monday, 1060 of our EA/RA admits have enrolled, but a few of those will melt over the summer (i.e. get into other schools off their waitlists), so my guess is that we'll take 15, maybe 20 people off the waitlist, but I don't know for sure.

If someone covered this, i missed it and sorry. We discussed this issue with someone at CPW. The other factor affecting available housing spots is the schools policy that if you are going to grad school at MIT, they offer rising seniors the opportunity to live in grad student housing, which I think they have been adding alot of in the last few years, as part of the strategic plan.

Admissions packets are to be "mailed" to 21 students today. Depending on yield, a few more may be offered admission within two weeks. Everyone else will be notified "by mail" that the wait list is over.

This info is from the top (ss'86) though perhaps not intended for general release yet.

I can't believe it. They make us wait so long and now it is finally over.

Good luck to all waitlisted people - may you find success in the college of your final choice and congratulations to all waitlist students who got in.

ONLY 21 students? Last yr, out 40 who were accepted off the waitlist, only 30 matriculated and enrolled.

That is a 75% yield.

MIT's The Tech newspaper says that there is +/- 20 spaces available for class of 2011. My point is this......if waitlist yield was similar to that of last year, wouldn't they shoot higher than 21 students? Right now, your saying they are going for 100% yield, which is unlikely even at Harvard, who has the highest matriculation rate of 80%.

I just called the admissions office and the lady on the phone told me that they would mail everybody on the waiting list (accepted or not) early next week, and that they would hold a few more spots if more openings showed up (with waitlisted students)

Newer news from Matt's blog:

This morning, we emailed (and will follow up via snail mail) 20 students, informing them that they have been admitted from the waitlist. ... Also, we will begin notifying some students on the waitlist that we will not be able to offer them admission. We offered a spot on the waitlist to about 500 people, and many of those people accepted a place on the waitlist. But it just isn't ethical to keep that many people on the waitlist at this point, so within the next week many students will receive a letter informing them that they will not get off the waitlist, and wishing them the best of luck at the college they've chosen.
