BerkelyMom, thank you so much for this article!

Update: The class is currently over-enrolled by a small number :

How did you find out the class is currently over enrolled by a small amount?

Are you sure Rice over-enrolled?!

yeah, i just called them 5 minutes ago. they’re over-enrolled, but since other schools are going off waitlists now, they think some spots may open up, and my the end of may, they’ll start telling waitlisted people if they’re in… and by june everyone should know.

Yep! The yield RD yield is probably around 28%.

I suspect that once the Ivies start the process later this week or early next week the class size may drop a bit and open up for 10-30 spots.

shougan: do you know how many spots rice is over-enrolled by?

Too lazy to do my math, so what’s the overall yield? And what’s the RD yield from last year?

If I remember correctly, Rice was overenrolled last year by about 150 students, which was more than usual, but I’m pretty sure they still ended up bringing some students in from the waiting list.

On second thought, 150 sounds like way too much. I’ll go see if I can find the radio podcast from last year about this and post a link to it. Someone from the admissions office was interviewed about this time last year.

wow. 150 is a lot. i’m priority waitlisted, so i’m really hoping they take some students off the waitlist this year too… though it doesn’t look too good.
thanks, BerkeleyMom, for the update!

Here’s a link to that show, from last year. At the time, Chris Munoz (Rice Admissions) didn’t think they’d be taking any students in from the waiting list, but I’m not sure that ended up being true.

thanks! it’s a very interesting interview, but it makes it sound even harder to get off the waitlist.

It’s anybody’s guess this year. Some of the kids who have committed ED to Rice may have to back out. HYPS may pull some of the kids from Rice… Good luck to you all! :)

I think you mean RD, right? Violating an ED contract is a breach of agreement and is highly unethical. Plus, getting in ED means the applicant would agree to withdraw all other applications.

I actually did mean ED, since technically you are always allowed to back out for financial reasons. There may be some ED kids whose parents feel their jobs are in too precarious a position to have their kids attend Rice. (Though Rice is very good about providing financial aid…) But I guess we’ll just have to see if that actually happens. I’ve got my fingers crossed for those waitlisted CC students here. :)

Hey guys,

I don’t have exact figures, but I’ve spent some time digging for data and here’s what I’ve discovered:

To answer Modulation’s question on the yield:
Historically, Rice’s overall yield is between 34% and 37%. My guess is that the current overall yield is around 34% (200 + ~880)/(2400 + 200) with 200ish ED applicants and the 650+30ish RD applicans from the 2400 offered admission, which would make the RD pool around 28% (~680/2400).

Of course this is all assuming the size of over-enrollment is between 30-80. I am guessing it is less than 100 because when I spoke with the officer at Rice she was very frank about the over-enrollement but was not so overly concerned to the point where she was in a frenzy by the thought of a foreseeable a housing crisis.

Also, this news of 150 people over-enrolling last year is not so grim since Rice took 13 people off the Wait List that year; thus that would still leave a slight chance for those on the priority wait list.

You never know… May could shuffle the class quite a bit! Don’t loose hope. I know today’s news kinds sucked (the officer at rice could tell the excitment in my voice dropped when she broke the news), but the stats could be worse ;)

Again, I may have been wrong about that 150 number. cb815–you just listened to the interview last year. What was the actual number?

So, given that the RD yield is 28% this year, the yield (Y) should be…

Y= .0072x + .28, where x is the percent of class admitted under ED.

…derived from Y = [x+(100-x)(.28)] / 100

Just listened to the podcast… 15-35 over enrollment. Goal was 775, at the time of the interview they had 790-810 depositors.

Guess cb815 was right… looks like it shall be equally tough to last year to get in. Fun…
