Waitlist decisions

almost there… if 2 people have been offerred and they take it. then thats it? or how does it work?

It depends, Antarius. It’s likely the class size will still see a little melt due to other universities’ waitlists, and then some more spots may open up.

true that. Cool

Well, good luck everyone!

Oh, wow, only two so far?! Rice is REALLY doing well this year with its yield…

Don’t give up!!

Not necessarilly, the waitlist doesn’t really tell you anything about a school’s yield. Rice could have just admitted like 4000 students for its ~800 spots and by chance they’ve had to take two students from the waitlist. As some one else already mentioned well probably lose a few more kids as other school’s waitlists come out also. If I had to guess I’d say that Rice’s yield took a hit this year.

but they didnt admit that many. i think that the yield is better this year. Rice is also real rich and giving good money, so there is an addl. incentive to go to Rice in this bad economy

And those facts should pretty much destroy all hope for the rest of us. :/

So has everybody received some sort of update either by mail or e-mail by now? I haven’t received one and I’m a little concerned, particularly with the previous news of being offered a place on the ‘extended waitlist’…

I’m feeling rather hopeless considering how the only update I’ve received was an email about remaining on the waitlist. Has anyone received a call about getting removed from the waitlist? Or is everyone else simply waiting like I am?

I would not place a lot of hope for getting off the wait list at this point. If you read the acceptances numbers thread http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/rice-university/725614-rice-record-number-applicants-acceptances.html</a> the Rice yield went way up and they are over committed for the freshman class. They are now trying to get upper class students to move out of their residential college and into the Historic wing of Will Rice to make room for all the freshmen. They are hoping some decide to go elsewhere at this point.

I am a transfer student on the wait list who was proffered the same thing. I suppose I am a bit more hopeful seeing as I am not a freshman. Still though, it’s definitely a test of endurance.

yeah. singersmom is right. they have no place to house people already accepted. kinda poor planning by the admissions dept.

What about off campus housing?

well, this is how it works. All upperclassmen have a housing draw. so we set aside say 90 beds for freshmen and fill the remainder with Seniors, Juniors and how many ever sophomores we can fit (the rest get kicked off)

Now, each college that has 90 freshmen beds now was 100 incoming freshmen.

All freshmen are guaranteed housing and upperclassmen have already signed hoisuing contracts. so, they need to shunt upperclassmen to another building if they can

Oh, thanks Antarius!

I guess they could always bunk up in forced triples (that’s what I had to do my freshman year) or give monetary incentives to the upperclassmen to move (that’s also what was available to us - if you decided to move to a less desirable part of campus, room and board was cheaper).

i guess a discount wil help. lets see what happens. it wil work out

Antarius - It was a tough year for admissions departments at all colleges to figure out how many of the kids who are offered admissions will accept and actually show up. The wacky economy and shaky job market made EVERYTHING uncertain in college admissions. I don’t think it’s quite fair to call it “poor planning” on admissions account, but rather that they anticipated the poor economy would reduce their admissions yield. It looks like it didn’t! It’ll work out - and at least there will be a nice new pool and rec center to hang out at if the rez halls get too crowded. ;)

^^ thats true. guess i didnt think about it that way.

Is anybody else a transfer student on the extended wait list? Any thoughts on when we might hear anything? I think Rice Orientation Week starts August 16th and they said that spots open up through early August - that’s cutting it close, right?
