I was recently waitlisted to the school of commerce and was wondering if anyone knows on average how many students they take off the waitlist. I'm an OOS, so I was wondering if that would factor in at all (like do they go to in-state students first). Thanks for the help...after waiting a couple of months this is going to weigh me down even more into the summer, although i realize my shots of getting in are small.

Another question now that ive thought of it, does the waitlist committee only take into consideration the last semester grades you get when they make a decision. And one more quesition, when do we find out if we get rejected or accepted?

You'll find out sometime in May, and OOS shouldn't mean a thing when it comes to the Comm School. I don't know how many they take off, but applicant numbers are increasing while the overall class size is staying the same. I believe the waitlist committee looks (probably) at your last semester grades because the reason you're on the waitlist in the first place is because they wanted to see another semester of grades.

You can reapply but that means you'd be in college for five years -- no early grad from Comm school.

I think historically, close to half of the ultimate class is taken from the waitlist. OOS is irrelevant. Your grades this semester are important, but still only part of the consideration. If you do well this semester you have a pretty good chance of getting in.

It seems to me pretty unfair how they leave so many kids out there hanging into May. I understand the desire to have the extra grades when making the admissions decision - but then why not just push the application process back further?

I find it very frustrating how little information the Comm school gives to applicants about the whole process. I remember last year a whole lot of my friends were pretty confused.

If you don't get in, just pick another major like econ and take really easy classes until you graduate. People from UVa get great jobs with all kinds of majors. You don't need to major in finance to get an offer from Bain or McKinsey.

holla9: Are you serious when you said, "I think historically, close to half of the ultimate class is taken from the waitlist." I was thinking it was a very small % of students who got in off the waitlist for commerce. i still don't want to give myself too much unwarranted hope, so are you serious? Probably still won't get in because my GPA this semester isn't going to be great, but id like to know if this is an actual stat you know about.

to cavalier: im an OOS attending a private university...so im not already in UVA.

ARGGHH...i really want to go to UVA. i guess ill have to use my experience out of high school to get me through this (got accepted to my #1 school but the school didnt give me enough financial aid to go there). i love the college selection process!! Not.

Holla9: Not so true. Look at UVa - Transfer Admission and you'll see that ~900 make up the class. Look at the blog Transferring to UVA and the most they've taken is 100. That's not even near half.

For Comm, you have a much much lower chance of getting in off the waitlist. Yes, it sucks, but it's competitive here, and even more for transfers. Try sending a letter to the office and expressing your interest for both the Comm school and CLAS. Like Cav said, an econ major is almost as good as, if not on par, with a finance degree.

I'm sorry - I thought you were a current UVA second year who got deferred in the initial round of admissions. I have no idea the answer to any of your questions if you're a transfer.

If I want to send a letter, what address should i send it to? Would it be: Peabody Hall, McCormick Road, Charlottesville, VA 22903 (which is undergraduate admissions) or P.O. Box 400160 • Charlottesville, VA 22904 (which is where I mailed my transcript to).
