S on WL for MT at Point Park. Was told we’d hear by 4/1. Curious if others on WL have heard. PointWeb doesn’t seem to EVER be updated. S was told he’d get a letter, but we’ve not received anything.

I don’t know specifically about Point Park, but April 1 is very soon to hear about a waitlist position, as that is the deadline for all colleges to let students know of acceptances. Accepted students have until May 1 to let colleges know of their decisions. So many schools will not know if they are going to their waitlists until after that date. Of course, hopefully, students will make up their minds and let schools know well before that. However, so many MT students auditioned for so many schools, and can, of course, only attend one, that once final decisions are made, it will be a huge, complicated process that will be quite a domino effect. Your best bet is to put a deposit down on a school now, refundable or not, so your student is guaranteed of a spot, and then wait and see. I know of students who were taken off waitlists and offered MT spots well into May last year. Best of luck!

Agreed about 4/1 being early for WL notification, but that was date specified in letter from Pt. Park. It said the COPA wanted to finish all auditions before making a final decision on S. So I’m not sure S’s status is tied to kids turning down PPU, but rather to seeing the final pool of applicants…or perhaps both? Anyway…the waiting continues… :)

has anyone else wait listed at PPU heard from them?

Apparently some students that had initially been accepted did not get their deposit in on time so the class is full, and they are now first on the wait list. I think this is extremely unfair, because they didn’t even get a warning, and it’s still 3 weeks before the may 1st deadline. Not to mention it looks ridiculously bad to reject a student after they had already been told they were “in”. So my guess is any kid that was initially on the wait list is now even further down because there are kids who got accepted who still want to go, they just didn’t get their money in on time. I really don’t agree with this process.

^^Are you sure about students offered admittance to PPU now being waitlisted for the program? ALL admitted students have until the May 1st deadline to declare, and the school/program is to hold their spot until the student advises yes/no. It’s my understanding from the programs we visited, when the question of offered vs. enrolled came up, the response was the same - the program must accept all students who wish to take the slot, even if it means the program will exceed their expected yield. Several schools stated this had happened, and the following year’s class #s were reduced accordingly.

PPU’s program takes an unusually large # of students when compared with other MT programs, 2-3 times more than the average. I can’t even imagine how extensive their WL would be.

It’s true, it just happened to me! I received my acceptance letter along with a nice talent award to PP back at the very beginning of March and was so excited as this has been one of my top choices since the very beginning the audition process. My parents and I drove to Pittsburgh all the way from Texas over my Spring Break a couple weeks ago to visit the school and sit in on a class. We found it to be an amazing program. Jack Allison and Michael McKelvey were so welcoming and insightful. We knew after we left that PP was definitely at the top of the list.

After turning down several acceptances to other schools and narrowing my decision down to just two schools this past week, my parents went online this week to make our $350 tuition deposit to PP. Yesterday we received a very apologetic call from the Director of Artistic Recruitment informing us that they had already filled all available slots and unfortunately would not be able to admit us at this time and would place us pretty far down on a waitlist. His explanation was that they auditioned and made offers to quite a few kids that accepted early and made their deposit quickly. He was quick to point out that in the acceptance letter they encouraged kids to secure their place in the 2012 class by making a deposit as soon as possible as they often reach their limit prior to May 1st. He stated that they generally don’t have that many kids accept so early and while they usually have a pretty good idea of what percentage will accept, this year has been unusually different and they did not have room to take in any more. Needless to say I am devastated and heartbroken after a long journey of auditions beginning last Fall.

Futurereno - I am so sorry to hear about your situation. It seems quite unbelievable that early April is too late to secure your place in the program. I hope everything works out for you.

Wow! This is shocking. Can they really do this?

The same thing happened to us. We paid the deposit at the end of March and there was a wait list already. Luckily we did not turn down any acceptances yet and we are now researching and visiting schools 2 and 3. I was upset at first, but there is nothing we can do now except wait and see if D gets accepted. We are moving forward as if PP is a no and trying to figure out the next best option and hoping that she gets off the wait list.

I’m shocked. I’ve never heard of a school doing this.

If this is true, you guys should go to the media. I don’t believe this is legal. It most certainly isn’t ethical.

It is true…we are going through it right now.

Unbelievable. You should get your school counselor involved. If PPU is accredited this should not be allowed. Although I’m not sure what recourse you would have at this point.

I had heard this about PPU, but am incredulous that it is happening this year. Parents of juniors, take heed. This goes against the standard operating procedures of most colleges and universities.

On PP’s own website, it says May 1: “Tuition Deposit Deadline
The universal deadline date is May 1. The deadline date in your acceptance letter is a recommended date based upon the time at which you applied and were offered admissions to Point Park.” From: [Pay Tuition Deposit | Point Park University](http://www.pointpark.edu/Admissions/FullTimeUndergraduate/WelcomeRoom/PayTuitionDeposit)

Also directly on PPU’s site:

Why Pay Early?
The $350 tuition deposit is applied directly against first-semester fees
It holds the student’s spot in the incoming class. This is especially important for artistically accepted dance and theatre students who may be placed on a wait list if the deposit is submitted at a later date.

It’s a process PPU has done for several years – and maybe a “curse” of rolling admission and now a higher audition numbers process. D was accepted last year in mid-November after their October auditions. She had a suggested deposit due date of (I think) early January – well before she would have more results or would have completed her auditions.

However, this deposit was stated to be fully refundable, if requested before the May 1 due date. PPU was one of her contenders so, even though we found it odd, we sent in the deposit early. She also (at their instruction) signed and returned her talent and academic scholarship agreements, as they were not binding if she did not attend.

In the end, she chose another school, we contacted PPU, and the deposit was returned. They were a school that contacted her again in July, stating they would up her talent award if it was finances that caused her to cancel her acceptance. So it sounds like there continued (at least in prior years) to be movement of the class even through the summer, if a space opened up in July.

Is this different than the SOP at many other colleges? You betcha. But so is their rolling artistic admissions process. It’s got to be hard to figure out how many admissions to offer along the way, “saving” others for later auditionees. Makes me wonder if the recent increase in application/audition numbers to MT programs in general will cause PPU to re-examine this practice.

For those of you caught in this bind, I am so sorry to hear it!! I’d suggest you keep in contact with PPU, if this is truly your top hope.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I hope it works out for all the students who really want to attend PPU.

It seems that kids who are accepted to Point Park need to send a deposit immediately. Then, they will have until May 1 to decide (just like any other school) and they can get their deposit back. The problem with this system is that it seems to rely on the bad luck of those who don’t read the fine print. Once the peculiarity is better known, the problem is back to square one. Two many spots offered for not enough places. Then what?

This process is grueling enough!!! I can not imagine being in this situation. My heart goes out to you parents and students that find themselves devastated like this and now researching other options.

This is so wrong. And it’s illegal.

I just looked up the National Association of College Admission Counselors (NACAC). Point Park is a member. According to NCAC Statement of Principles of Good Practice, Mandatory Practices:

"3. permit first-year candidates for fall admission to choose, without penalty, among offers of admission and financial aid until May 1. (Candidates admitted under an Early Decision program are a recognized exception to this provision)

work with their institutions’ senior administrative officers to ensure that financial
aid and scholarship offers and housing options are not used to manipulate
commitments prior to May 1"

Apparently there is an Interpretation of of Mandatory Practices, pages 6 – 11 that further clarifies the above, but I couldn’t find it, but I just did a quick google search.

It seems to me that Point Park is clearly in violation of the NCAC rules, I think that everyone that this happened to should make a complaint with NCAC. It sounds like you really have a case.

Also soozievt has posted on this before #145 http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/point-park-university-mt/98521-point-park-10.html
