I have a problem, but I really don't know how "severe" it is, it involves CAT 1 and Chem 6a, I'm hoping a Sixth College student could possibly help out with a choice I might have to make.

As you all know, Chem 6a was waitlisted for many teachers, just today, I received an email telling me a new section for Stuarts 3:00-3:50pm lecture has opened, but it is only available through adding the section code from the email.

Now, being on a waitlist for that same lecture, I took the opportunity and enrolled...first come first serve. However, in doing so, I knew I would create a small conflict. My CAT 1 lecture is Tuesdays-Thursdays from 2:00-3:20pm, but also on Thursday, I have my Chem 6a Discussion from 3:00-3:50 pm. Which means on Thursdays I have a time overlap between the CAT 1 lecture and the Chem 6a discussion of about 20 minutes...

Now, my dilemma is to choose which is the more important, and which is not, In my opinion, I'm considering skipping a portion of my CAT 1 class to take the Chem 6a Discussion if there are quizzes...EC... and other such opportunities during the discussion, but I do not know the importance of discussions or CAT 1 lectures really...

So in short,

How important are Chem 6a discussions?

How important is it to go to every Lecture for a class like "Cat 1"?

Do people generally go to discussions often? Or is it just for extra help?

You’re fine. There is no extra credit or quizzes in chem 6a classes to my knowledge. Also, you are by no means bound to go to the section you’re enrolled in. So you can go to your lecture and attend a different section thats at a better time.

i had quizzes in chem 6a and (maybe) 6b…i cant remember, but i know i had them in 6a in my section, because my section was at 9pm on a thursday night and it was hell having to take quizzes in it. my professor was “skip” pomeroy though

you should email your professor to see his/her policy on quizzes, or search google to see if there are any wandering syllibi around

Depending on your professor, you will have quizzes/won’t have quizzes. MOST Chem 6 Series professors give quizzes except for the really difficult professors where your grade is solely dependent on your Midterm and Final exam grades.

You made the right choice in signing up for the secret section, regardless if it conflicts with another class or not. I ALWAYS took advantage of them (and they always, ironically, conflicted with another class) but if you tell your professor the first day of lecture, tell him/her your situation, they’ll let you choose another section to go to (: Professor Johnson let me do that for 6A & 6C, so you basically get to choose any discussion you want, as long as you’re enrolled in their lecture.
