waitlist situation as of april 15th

My kid did the "waitlist dance" one year with an AEDS school and it was a horrible summer. We got a letter every month or so beginning in June saying, we really want to find a place for you, please be patient." She is in a top tier school now but we have personally never heard of anyone getting off a waitlist from those schools. I will admit that our experience is pretty limited, but just look at what other people on this board have said in the past.
We got the final letter from that school in the beginning of September saying, "we were hoping to find a place for you, but those spots have not materialized as we were expecting." My only reason for saying this is that if you have been accepted at a great school, you may want to really consider just diving in and making that school your own if you want to go there and let go of the waitlist schools. The chances are so small and I am telling you that waiting the whole summer is going to ruin your summer and your family's summer. The schools all know basically who is coming and not coming RIGHT NOW. If you know they are overfull, especially (reportedly info from this board from people who have actually spoken with admissions or it is printed in the school's newspaper) like Deerfield and Hotchkiss, and you are waitlisted there, don't you think it would be smart to just make a decision and stick with it? The agony is really bad if anyone knows you applied and knows that you have been waitlisted and then you have to not only go through the agony from March 10, but they will be asking you all summer if you have heard anything from that school. If you have a choice, and you can be happy with that other choice, the just go for it. I hope I have helped because I just don't want anyone else to go through that "dance" all summer if there is a really good alternative to that waitlist school. Gosh, sorry this was so long.

I know I'm not normally the one who's succinct, but I'd sum that excellent post by hpflrent thusly: "Embrace your reality!"

Thanks D'yer Maker. I don't usually post on this board but I really feel strongly that sometimes kids put all their heart into one school, their first choice, when their second or third choice can turn out to be so totally awesome and absolutely perfect for them. My last thought on this was that I have been so impressed with the admissions people at these schools. They do know a good fit when they see it, so if you have been accepted somewhere, it probably was felt to be a "good fit" by a whole committee of people in admissions. They do not want anyone who they know is not going to be happy at their school. And yes, D'yer Maker, you are always succinct and we all enjoy so much your fine posts!

You lost all credibility when you said I am "always succinct." If I didn't have to run out the door right now, I'd give you five paragraphs on why you're so wrong about that.

hpflrent ---excellent post

Kudos hpflrent!

Thank you!
I hope our experience with the waitlist and prep school admissions will help even one other person. There comes a point when the obsessing about one certain school cannot possibly be healthy. We all get our "favorites" in our mind, but the reality is that after visiting several schools, they are all so excellent as far as academics and facilities. I don't think I met an unkind or unfriendly person during the whole process. Is there really a "bad" school out there in the realm of east coast/NE prep schools? It is a great feeling for your child to say to you after this experience, "I'm so glad I never got into "school A" because I totally love the school I'm going to. That would never have happened if I had gotten off the waitlist for "school A." That is very cool to hear from your kid :-)

Choate had a record-high this year and was officially full at 850 students without resorting to the waitlist. Therefore, unless students are not given re-enrollment contracts or are dismissed before the end of this school year, Choate will not be taking any students off of its waitlist.

tugttw- have they officially let the students on the waitlist know this?

Yes, they have, Dr. Nancie. Worst letter ever.

By worst letter, I mean I didn't like getting it - it was written well, though. :)

olivia!!! i was really hoping you could go to choate . oh well ... APPLY NEXT YEAR!!!

From the choate website From the Admission Office —
We are not encouraging late applications due to our post April 10 decision response. At this point we are fully enrolled for the spaces we have available for the fall of 2007. Experience tells us that there could be some shifting in our enrollment in the coming weeks; however, this is unpredictable and unlikely.

I just learned that Belmont Hill School is fully enrolled and will not be going to its wait list this year

anyone hear at all from milton at all??...

milton said there is no movement at ALL yet (for juniors at least)
and that I should just wait? So it probably means "there are not spots for you and never will be", but I'll wait it out. I'm not going sulk over it anymore. I know I have other options for next year :)

They told us that wait list movement was very unlikely for 9th grade
at this point..did not say impossible...lady did say since we did not
need FA better odds but was still pessimistic..
Sorry not better news...got letters from Andover and Deerfield
also about being full and needing to keep telling them that we
want to stay on etc. Ugg...SUXX!!
4 lists and none seem likely...persistence is usuall good but
in this case we are resigned to thinking it will not happen
lest my daughter go insane...and if it does...well then she
will be unexpectedly thrilled...but not counting on it..
