tugttw--- thanks so much for posting this. very interesting article.

I second that. Thanks for the article.

25%? i never knew it's that high

I applied to Exeter--did everything right but they misplaced alot of my paperwork. By the time we got it straightened out and they found what was missing, March 10 had come and gone. I don't think I should be penalized for their mistake but they hold all the cards.

Just an FYI for those reading this thread -- this thread is from last year (2007) so don't assume that the waitlist info on this thread is for this year.

dmoran -- Exeter did exactly the same thing to another student on this board last year. It resulted in a rejection, even after all the paperwork was straightened out -- Exeter has already offered all the admission spots they have open so if you were hoping to get in, it is probably time to move on.

Last year, when that happened the student was given a choice. They would refund the application fee or they would review and make a decision. In addition to the Exeter case you mention, hsmomstef, I believe it also happened to blairt with Andover.

I'd take the refund...because even if they felt really, REALLY sorry about what happened, that won't open up a bed. Not surprisingly, the students from last year who had misplaced applications ended up getting rejection letters.

Moral of the story: Be vigilant about ensuring that your application materials are in and that the school considers your application to be complete. That's no guarantee that all will go as planned, but you can't have any regrets if you do all you can do.

Actually, I think it was more widespread last year than I had recalled above. It looks like there were a couple instances at Exeter, blairt at Andover and Chaos Theory at Deerfield (and that's just those mentioned in this other thread from last year):

dmoran - If you have another place that you want to go to next year, GO. Not because they are mean, incompetent, or anything else at Exeter (or anywhere else that messed up.) Mess ups in paperwork will recur in your life, and unfortunately, good opportunities may be lost. Take the opportunities in hand, and run with the ball! If you did not get in to a school that you want to go to, fight them tooth and nail, you have nothing to lose.

Same thing happen as W-T-F at Deerfield and still have not heard ANYTHING from them - think they would refund our $50 back ?? :)

Westpath: If you haven't heard anything from Deerfield, then it's appropriate to ask for a refund. It's embarrassing for a school to admit they lost your application, but there's no reason not to straighten out the financial side of things. Have they cashed your check? If they haven't, they may not have received your application.

hotchkiss overenrolled, i got an email saying so

I really had my heart set on Exeter and I can't believe what has happened. They misplaced my essays and my English/Humanities recommendation. It took alot of phone calls and emails for them to finally say, "oh yeah! We found them, so we'll give you a decision by May 1"

Even if they give you a decision by May 1...they still need to give you a refund. Okay...so if they say, "You're accepted," maybe you don't ask for it. But if it were a restaurant and they were this late putting the food on the plate, they'd still comp the meal even though they got it to you and you enjoyed it. So...let's see what they say in May. And then insist that they refund the money. If they have any scruples and character, they'd volunteer it.

I'm still waitlisted for financial aid at NMH- apparently we'll hear from them by May 1.
crosses fingers

I hear Andover is full for 9th grade girls?

I wonder if it is better to take the SSAT in November, and get everything needed sent in a bit ahead of time? That way if a school loses something there is more time to remedy the situation? For those who will be applying this coming fall, that is.

This may be really off topic, but I'll risk it.
Three years ago, my twin nieces, who are brilliant straight A students, SSAT 99percentile ranking, etc., were waitlisted at Exeter, Andover, Deerfield, St. Paul's. They only got into their safety school (not mentioned anywhere in this forum). They cried, they had their tantrums, then they accepted their reality. They graduate next month and will be heading off to MIT in the fall.

Wow. mom0809, thats really awesome :]
kudos to them!

Did they end up attending the safety? It's nice to hear a "When one door closes...." type of story.

Yes, they did attend the safety. It was their only option if they wanted to go to boarding school.
It was a very difficult time for them because it was one of those situations where they just had their hearts set on Andover and Exeter. Their friends with lesser qualifications all made it to Andover, so it was a shock to them.
Incidentally, MIT accepted them with almost full financial aid, which was a total relief to their parents. It would have meant selling the house or attending WPI :)
