Notes from Peabody II: The UVA Application Process

Here's an interesting article about college waitlists.

UVA is overbooked.

If I didn't get into Michigan I would have been freaking out as I read that post!

I'm just coming back to lurk, since my D has decided on a school other than UVA. But the thing that I find so compelling about the UVA board (other than the fact that I happen to like the university) is that you have an Admissions Dean as an active participant on the board, giving you accurate info whether the news is encouraging or not. As far as I know, Dean J is the only regular contributor to a CC forum from an Admissions office. It seems to me a very human and humane way to interact with prospective applicants and students, and I think it must enhance the image of the UVA administration in the eyes of the current and future students who post here.

And you forget that she's also a great tool for current students :) She helped me pick a place for my birthday dinner (Downtown Grill) and it was fantastic! She's helped numerous others with stuff to do, places to eat, places to stay, academic questions, etc.

How often does overenrollment happen? Is it due to dropping ED?

Another student asked similar questions in the comments section of my blog. I'll repeat what I wrote there and add a little more...

This situation hasn't come up during my time at UVa, but I have seen it occur at other schools. The reasons for this happening can vary dramatically, from a great performance in the NCAA tournament (clearly not our situation this year ;)) to rumors of a celebrity joining the freshman class.

....basketball isn't the only sport. UVA actually did incredibly well last season in football and just as well in the first round of the NFL being one of the only schools with 2 first round draft picks

p.s the mens lacrosse team is ranked 2 in the nation and plays in the quarterfinals this week.....

plus maybe the 30 extra students enrolled because they are guaranteed to see USC play at Scott Stadium which is much easier to get into than the Coliseum in southern California

gadad:

Tufts also has a real admissions rep responding to posts. But, like you, I lurk on this board just to learn about admissions from DeanJ.

The timing of the NCAA tournament lends itself to factoring into the college decision process.

...ok you win :)

George Mason saw a significant increase in enrollment when their Men's Basketball team became something of a media darling during the Patriots' improbable run into the Final Four of the 2006 NCAA tournament.

It should be noted that Jim Larranaga, their Head Basketball Coach, was one of Terry Holland's Assistant Coaches at UVa, along with Craig Littlepaige, UVa's current Athletic Director. Now those were glory days for Virginia Basketball.

Guess there'll be a lot of Davidson frosh in triples this fall!

I wouldn't be at all surprised if that turns out to be the case. The school garnered a boat load of positive publicity with their basketball team's NCAA performance this spring.

I live in Kansas and my sister goes to KU (won national championship in basketball) and is writing a paper on application spikes after winning the title. I think I actually read an article that it goes up 6-8% for the winning school. I would never think it would have that big of an influence.

UVA Waitlist active according to Dean J blog.

I know that gadad posted this like two weeks ago, but I just wanted to note that as time progresses and more admissions offices realize the impact that technology can play, more admissions deans are making themselves available to students via blogs and messageboards. Dean J is not the only one. For example, Admissions Daniel plays a big role on the JHU forums and MIT, U of Chicago, and Olin all have blogs. Some have student contributors and some have Deans.

To be quite honest, I miss the days (like 10 years ago) when you just did your application, sent it, and hoped everything got there. Even as Deans make themselves more available, people feel the need to post so they can say "I contacted Admissions!" and the number of repeat posts where the answer could have been found with a simple search is astounding. (May I point to the likely letter debacle that stretched on for like 4 months on the blog and CC?)

I think the greatest thing we have is student contributors; when we think of random laundry and linen questions, they have more advice and tricks than the Deans do. They also weigh in and give their knowledge on their experience with admissions, whether it be first year or transfer. We have multiple perpectives which helps students out and current students also weigh in on things that Dean J may not want to get tangled with. (example: chances threads.)

Having said that, I still love Dean J. :) Mostly, I love her pictures and the fact that she puts up with so much of the stuff we 18,000+ applicants put her through.

About a week ago, Dean J posted on her blog that release letters (and a few admittances) were sent. Many kids appear not to have gotten a letter yet and the UVA online status page is currently inoperable. What gives?

powderpuff has mentioned this many times, so I'll pass on her words of wisdom:
Charlottesville mail is really really slow. Be patient and it will eventually get to you.

From my experience, it took about two and a half weeks to get my initial decisions letter and when they sent me the viewbook, I received it about a month and a half after turning in my deposit physically at UVa. Iggy, I'm about 20 miles outside of the city. (if that gives you any sense of when you could get your mail.). It's only been a week and half, so I would wait a until at least Monday before calling them to check your status. (if possible.) good luck!

db123 --thanks. Hard to believe it takes so long for mail to get from Charlottesville to DC. Must have been quicker in Mr. Jefferson's day!
