My friend (who doesn't have a CC account) said that he just got an e-mail from Rice that said they were extending the life of their waiting list to July 15th. He then had to re-submit his desire to remain on the waiting list. Did everyone on the waiting list get an e-mail like this or have some people been nixed?

thanks llegar i jsut checked my email yes i did get it haha hopefully they take a lot more! =)

oh forgot to mention the email said 7 people have been accepted so far:

In April, we requested permission to place your name on the waiting list as an alternate for Rice's class of 2012. We were pleased by your positive response and I am writing to update you on our current situation. Since May 1, seven students have been offered admission from the waiting list, and at present, the class is full.

In our earlier correspondence we indicated that we would close down Rice's waiting list on June 30. As you may have read in the newspaper and other media sources, there is an unusually high number of wait list offers going out from many of our peer institutions. Because of the lack of stability among the nation's most selective schools, Rice has decided to extend the life of the waiting list to July 15.

To update us on your current desire to remain on the waiting list or withdraw from it, please reply online with your login id () by May 30, 2008.

Sincerely,

Elite Colleges Reach Deeper Into Wait Lists - WSJ.com

so does anyone think there is still a chance for us waitlistees?

Yes, I believe there is still a chance. It looks like there might be some movement due to the very large number of people being taken off the Harvard and other ivy colleges waitlists. Probably not a huge number of people, but possibly a few.

Duke just announced that it is taking 200 off the waitlist! This is bound to have some effect on Rice as there is so much overlap in the two college communities...

I do not think Duke will pull much from Rice.

anxiousmom: i hope so. i really really want off of rice's waitlist, so i can call myself a member of the class of 2012.

christian2: you may or may not be right. but i'm going to be hoping for the best. and hoping that rice will accept at least a 100!!!!!!...

this wait is killing me!!! i sure hope duke pulls a lot from rice. Like oceanflavored said, i hope its atleast a 100

I am rooting for you folks to get in since Rice is a great school. But since Rice is a great school, Duke is not really any better and thus my statement about Duke might not pull much from Rice.

yeah i'm an example of that. got off the waitlist at duke 3 weeks ago and didnt care.

That's because you've got your priorities straight, westside.

anybody think there's still a chance?

The problem with being on the Rice waitlist is that very few people will turn down Rice. It is a super-selective university with a really low price tag, irresistible in the current economy. Plus of course, the really small class size means fewer number of slots become available on the waitlist as well.

Having said that, you never know. Nothing is impossible with a little bit of luck on your side. Good luck to you and all the others waiting for Rice!

I sent them an updated resume and letter of continued interest yesterday and I just got a pretty nice response.

Hi John,

Thank you for the update, and congratulations on your latest
accomplishments! I will send a copy of your email to your application
file.

Kind Regards,

[Admissions Officer]

P.S. Your zeal for Rice does shine through.

johnny,

Was this via email or snail-mail? I never got a response for my letters of continued interest (this is my second time on the waitlist), which probably doesn't bode well for me.

I didn't get a response ethier but I sent them through snail-mail.

Oh well that could explain it, I emailed

johnnyhoward: what email address did you send it to? was it admi@rice.edu?
