I have just received from wonderful news from W&M that I have been accepted. A day before, I received word that I am wait listed for acceptance to UVa. Would there happen to be a way for me to secure a spot at William and Mary, but still wait out my decision for UVa. Because if UVa accepts me, I will go, but if not, I would go to W&M.

In order to secure a spot at W&M you will need to make a deposit by the deposit deadline there. You can stay on the wait list at UVA, and if admitted you can decline your acceptance at W&M, and make a deposit to attend UVA. If you are accepted to UVA after the deposit deadline at W&M it is likely you will loose your deposit at W&M.

You need to send a deposit to one school that you plan on attending in the fall. If you get off the wait list at UVa you can forfeit that deposit and accept the offer from UVa.

Congratulations on your acceptance to W&M. Definitely secure your spot with a deposit by May 1. W&M is a fantastic school with interesting professors, small(er) class sizes, good food, and a national reputation. You are in a good place.

The transfer waiting list isn’t as large…and I think because of the timing, this is a transfer student. The transfer decisions were posted on Friday. :)

I had a friend in high school who was accepted to UVa but waitlisted at Duke. He paid the deposit at UVa but got off the waitlist at Duke so he let UVa know immediately that he would be going to Duke, forfeited his deposit, and made a deposit at Duke.

That is how you would handle that situation. Make your deposit at one school (W&M, or otherwise), and continue to be on the waitlist for the school you would prefer. If you get off the waitlist, accept and let the other school know you won’t be attending; if not, go to the school you deposited to (ie. W&M).
