Hi all! I am a current high school senior who had the University of Delaware as my top choice and dream school since my junior year. I had a very low SAT score, but a 3.9 GPA, all As & Bs with honors and AP classes, as well as a ton of extra-curriculars. I just got accepted to UD off the waitlist today. For all those who are wait listed and have UD as their top choice, it IS possible to still get accepted. Show interest; I sent a letter expressing my dedication to the school, as well as had my guidance counselor call and reiterate my interest. Anything is possible. I also visited the campus last summer which also showed interest. After getting waitlisted I did not expect to get accepted, however I was completely wrong because I got accepted to my top 2 schools off the wait list (UD and Clemson). I am now deciding between the two. Don't lose hope, getting accepted off the waitlist DOES happen!!

I know the kids locally that got in are not going so I would assume there will be alot taken off the wait list. Previous years we saw many going to Udel, one year 26 from 3 HS I know. This year non are going.

My S received an e-mail from UDel this morning saying he came off their waitlist. He was all ready to make his decision to attend James Madison (and will probably still do so). It is unfortunate that, at this point, he is unable to attend an accepted students’s day, but I’ll offer to take him back to campus this weekend.

@ELY I am now facing the same decision with the same 2 schools!!! I already put my deposit down for JMU and I really like the school. But I loved UDel too!! I feel like they’re the same schools academically but UDel has the college town, the good sports teams, and a full college experience. But I also feel that I only got in off the waitlist because someone who got in regular decision decided not to attend. I don’t know what to do!!!

namesss:
I would not assume that UD’s decision to accept you off the waitlist was in any way less of an acceptance than regular decision. You would not have even been placed on the list if UD did not feel confident you could successfully matriculate at the school. I know of a number of students accepted off the wait list who went on to graduate with varying degrees of honors (magna cum laude, cum laude, etc.) from UD (your transcript/diploma will not indicate you were accepted off the wait list). IMHO being accepted off the waitlist should not be a factor at all in deciding whether you should attend UD or not. Just my opinion. Best of luck to you in making your decision. Both are excellent schools.

I was wondering if any of you who got accepted are OOS. My S is currently on the waiting list for engineering undeclared and university studies undeclared and is hoping to hear before he has to commit to another school. UD and the University of Minnesota Twin Cities are both top choices and he has been waitlist in both places. :(

zeekocat:
It is my understanding that most, if not all, the students UD places on the wait list are OOS students. UD pretty much accepts all the in-state students that it feels are capable of handling the rigor of courses at UD so very few, if any, are placed on the wait list. We should be seeing more and more acceptances off the wait list this coming week, especially after May 1. Even if your son has to commit to another school but is able to get in one of these two schools after May 1 (and really wants to attend one of them) the worst thing that could happen is that you would lose your deposit at another school. Good luck to your son. I hope he gets accepted by at least one of these schools. Both are excellent.

Mwallenmd: Thanks for the information and the encouragement. It’s just that the wait is becoming jarring. I hope it comes to and end soon with positive results.

Have many waitlisted applicants hear yet? When will most decisions
be announced? Shortly after May 1 or could it stretch until the end of the month?

zeekocat:
My son and a friend of his at school were taken off the wait list 4/25. They are aware of others at their school (OOS) that are still waiting to hear. My son and his friend will both definitely attend UDel. My son received an email, closely followed by a phone call from his Admissions Director. His portal was updated that evening as well. We have not received the famed yellow and blue envelope (nor am I sure if they will send one?) but deposits have been made and he could not be happier.

Mwallenmd:
Thank you for your great advise in these threads! We did as you suggested–as soon as my son found out he was on the wait list for UDel, he:
- clicked the button on his portal page to accept the position(within moments of the announcement)
- called the Admissions office that night to find out what he could do to help his position
- emailed the admissions office to say why this was a perfect fit for him and what he hoped to bring to the school, what he had been doing this past year (awards/projects/ fundraisers) and to let them know that if he was taken off the wait list he would definitely attend UDel.
- worked hard to maintain his grades
- had another teacher recommendation sent to the school
- talked to his guidance councilor

He is very thankful to have been called off the wait list. The waiting is painful. Best of luck to your son, zeekocat! I hope he hears soon!

My S received the “famed yellow and blue envelope” yesterday. I was surprised that they offered a little merit $ (we don’t qualify for financial aid). Not sure how one goes from being waitlisted to getting merit $–I’m thinking they are offering it to take the sting out of eating any deposit you may have put in elsewhere(?). I have to admit I’m sad to say goodbye to Delaware, as my son is set on JMU. Namesss put her finger on it–UDel has the sports teams & location, but he “felt the love” at JMU. Did you make a decision namesss?

Best wishes to those still waiting.

He’s innnnnn! Sobs of joy and relief. Thanks to the regional admissions counselor who listened and helped. :)

Congrats zeekocat to you and your son. Did he get accepted into engineering or university studies? Does he plan on attending?

That’s where the counselor was very helpful. It was obvious from S’s emails and letters to admissions that he had many interests - engineering and others. The counselor advised him to stick with University Studies which would be a better fit. He did and he got in the next day. And yes, he is going.

Congrats again. Have a great time at NSO. Maybe he will get real lucky and get placed in the new dorm on the East campus. I am biased but I feel your son will have a great time and will obtain a great education at UD as long as he applies himself. Best wishes.

Hi everyone I would just like to give some hope to those of you still out there waiting… After a lot of frustration and impatience, I was accepted today as a nursing major and could not be more ecstatic!!! Now is the hard part of making the final decision between UDel and where I have my deposit down, University of Vermont. I hope all goes well to anyone else still waiting!

Ye, this sucks. I’d have automatic admission to a few good schools, that i’m now waitlisted on; however, i have been suspended quite a few times for being headstrong. Hope y’all get in.

Congrats on your acceptance to the Nursing Program at UD. Among other schools our D was also accepted to UVM for Nursing but felt she best “fit in” at UD (she is not a cold weather/snow person). Both schools have excellent Nursing Programs, both campuses are beautiful, and the Nursing facilities at both are state-of-the-art, so you really can’t go wrong in attending either. If you have any questions about the UD Nursing Program please feel free to ask here (or PM me) and I will try to answer them to the best of my ability. Best wishes to you wherever you decide to attend.
