Just got off the waitlist! Deposit is paid at udel.. help!

I am thrilled to have just gotten off the waitlist at JMU! Now I am so torn. JMU was my number one throughout the whole admissions process but once I got waitlisted I looked more into udel. I found a major at udel that I 100% love. Jmu doesn't offer this major. The decision seems obvious.. to go with the major that I love. But jmu is my absolute dream school and I love everything about it.. the people, the campus, the safety, the location, the price. When I visited I honestly felt that cheesy feeling that I was "at home." When I visited udel I didn't get that same feeling but I knew I would have fun there and get a good education. I am out of state for both schools. JMU is cheaper. I think I have two weeks to decide. Help!

That’s why I think waitlists are intrinsically evil even if they do make business sense for the schools. They create situations that you now are in.

Let your emotions settle for a few days and during that time think over all the salient pros and cons as you see them. Then flip a coin, assigning each school a “head” or “tail”. If you are happy with the result of the flip, then that’s your school. If you have to keep flipping to get the “right” result, then you have your answer. If there is no difference in how you feel, go with then choose the cheaper option.

interesting that you were accepted to U Del but waitlisted to JMU?! What were your stats? Just curious.

Why was JMU your dream school?

What major are you considering at U Del?

How much more is the cost of U Del?

You said you were out of state for both- but is one of these campuses significantly closer to home? Where is home? JMU is in the middle of nowhere VA, and transportation is difficult. U Del is conveniently located on the Amtrak line so will be easier to get to and from if you are somewhere in the Northeast Corridor.

Vot, thank you I will make a pros and cons list and I will see how far that gets me. I have a feeling with the coin thing I would keep flipping to get jmu. I wish they offered my major or a similar major!

Pa mom, I know its crazy! I also got into VA tech. Don’t understand the reasoning for the jmu waitlist but hey at least I got in  stats are 1180 SAT, 1800 with writing.3.6 GPA, 3.9 weighted. Dual enrollment, a bunch of EC’s and alright essays.
Jmu is my dream school because I just love the atmosphere. I feel as though the school is calling my name. It sounds so cheesy but I love the attitude of the students and the campus itself. It would be so easy to fit in and to study there.
The major at UD is health behavior science. Jmu offeres dietetics but its very different. There’s more science and I am not a science person.
UD is about $7,000 cheaper so I’m thinking almost $30k by the time I’m done.
UD is about 3 hours away. Jmu is 6.
I just don’t know!

Just based on the objective facts, it sounds like U Del is the place for you.

offers your major

cheaper (did you get a scholarship? I thought JMU was the cheaper school)

closer to home

Against these options you have a feeling that you “loved” JMU and didn’t feel as strongly about U Del. But those type of first impressions can be deceiving and it won’t do you much good to “love” a school that doesn’t have your major. People seem very happy at U Del. I don’t think you could go wrong there.

Good luck with your choice!

Oh no I ment to say JMU is $7,000 cheaper I’m sorry.
I think I am leaning towards udel because the major but it is so hard to turn down jmu. Thank you for your input. Would you say it is a waste of time to go see jmu again? Maybe I can speak with the health science department and see what the majors are all about or sit in on a class, get the school catalog, talk to current students and see if I get the same feeling from the campus

I think you meant that JMU is cheaper - about $29,000 compared to about $36,000 for Delaware. It sounds to me like you really WANT to go to JMU - but the major is better at Delaware.

I would suggest you call the department head at JMU to discuss the dietetics major and what you prefer about the major offered at Delaware. Maybe there is some wiggle room at JMU to design your own major - or an interdisciplinary approach that would work. Since the major seems to be the major (no pun intended) stumbling block - investigate that further with JMU before making a decision.

The College of Integrated Science and Technology (CISAT) at JMU looks really impressive - it is one of the newest colleges there. Health sciences seems to me (the layman) to have many options for both majors and minors:

[Health Sciences - CISAT - JMU](http://www.healthsci.jmu.edu/)

I would talk with someone there before making your decision.

Rockvillemom, I laughed out loud at the major problem hahah although it is very true. You’re right.Maybe jmu could offer some different options. I’m going to make an appointment to talk to the department soon. Thank you very much!

Congrats! Would you mind telling me how you found out you got off the wait list?

Thanks! I got a call this morning from my admissions counselor. I missed the call but he left a message. And he said an email and a letter are on the way. Are you waiting?

Congratulations on your admission to JMU!

My daughter is just finishing up her sophomore year at JMU and as you can see by my screen name, I am a graduate of U of D. They are both excellent schools. My daughter was debating between the two a few years ago. We only live 15 minutes from U of D, but we are just over the line in Pennsylvania. She decided that U of D was too expensive to be so close to home.

She loves JMU and is studying abroad next semester. I think she would have loved U of D also. It is such a pretty campus and there is a lot to do on campus.

Are you sure you are going to stick with your major? I would visit JMU one more time, or at least talk to someone in the science department. On the way home, you can stop by U of D one more time, since it is right off Hwy. 95.

I know I have probably only confused you more, but try to go with your gut. Once you have made a decision, don’t look back!

Best of luck! You have two wonderful options. Let us know what you decide. My second daughter will be a senior next year and she wants to attend JMU also…however, her stated reason is because she really loves the food whenever we go to visit her sister.

heyyou, congratulations on your admittance to JMU! I had a feeling you would be hearing from the school with good news. I think rockvillemom and BlueHen have given you some sound advice regarding your current situation. The difference in cost is a factor that you should weigh carefully, especially if using loans. Remember also that many students change their majors even more than once in their college careers, so it is important that you like other things about whatever school you choose. Good luck to you in making your choice!

Thank you for the great answers! I was wondering of you could help me out a little more please. I’ll update you on the situation.

So I have really decided that I should go with my heart and go to jmu. I have realized that it is likely that I may change my major. However…my whole family is rooting for udel. They want me to me closer. And not only are they rooting for udel, they are pretty much against me going to jmu. They just don’t understand the uniqueness of the school and what is drawing me to it. My dad refuses to visit and he even said that if I go there he will never pick me up/drop me off/go visit :frowning: sometimes he says things he doesn’t mean but I can tell that this will hurt our relationship if I go.

I hate to let my family and mostly one parent decide my future.

Although I hate to let down one parent and my entire family by making my own decision about the future.

My dad thinks that since it is so far away I will be getting job offers around VA and not around home. I see where he is coming from and he thinks he is going too lose me. He is not open to traveling and coming to visit. So if I end up living south (which us what I would prefer) I can pretty much kiss my family good bye.

I hate how all of these factors are weighing on my one decision as a 17 year old :(

Sorry this is long but please offer any insight! THANK YOU!

Your family is being unfair, and I’m surprised since JMU is less expensive. My son is a sophomore at JMU, and we are 7 hours away. He made us reach way out of our geographic comfort zone, but the university is worth it. Save the money for going abroad. We had to realize that he would only be home on major vacations, and we went down for parents weekend in October and once more in April. We got used to it, and knowing he is so happy makes us feel better. He wouldn’t come home any more often if it was UDEL.

The health fields have some of the lowest unemployment percentage during these years of recession and their future seem strong due to aging demographics and other. The University of Delaware is well known in its health care majors and research, all the way up to through it’s medical school. Health behavioral science is a hot topic major.

One way to approach this decision is which school would offer you the best training for the post undergraduate job market, as well as avenues to graduate training should you choose. 2011 Undergraduates are finding the job market a tough one, and if our economy stays lateral as many expect, you might want to consider your personal specifics in the health care job market of tomorrow.

Just want to let you guys know I ended up choosing jmu. They offer a major in health science with a concentration in health assessment and promotion. So almost the same and I am beyond excited to be a Duke! It was hard to turn down Delaware but I know I made the right choice. My parents have started to turn around and realize how happy I would be at jmu. Thank you for all of the help

I’m really glad it worked out for you! Post in the fall and let us know how everything is turning out and how your freshman year experience is going.

Just came across this post and wanted to thank you all again for the great advice! It really helped my situation. I am now on summer break from JMU and I couldn’t be happier. I absolutely love everything about the school. I made amazing friends and had unforgettable experiences. It turns out there are a large amount of students from NJ, and more specifically in my county in NJ! My family has gotten used to the distance, and came to visit on family weekend and my dad did come to drop me off and pick me up  he likes the school too, but wishes I wasn’t so far. But it’s worth it to go to this university. I want to thank you again, you all gave me a lot of reassurance during a stressful time. I appreciate all of it and I couldn’t be happier at JMU :)

Heyyou - thanks for the update. My DD was also choosing between PSU, UDEL and JMU and it was a tough decision. She ended up deciding on JMU. She is so excited to go to springboard in June. Love to hear that it all worked out for you.
