Waitlisted at Dodge...

Hi,
I just got waitlisted at Chapman's Dodge film school, it's my top choice. Or least it was. It says to be considered for the waitlist I need to send an email, I am wondering though if I should send a video, just a simple one of me, since it is a film school. Or if that would be to much and I should just write an email.

-- Thanks

I would send a short email, not a video. State that it’s your first choice and that you will attend if admitted (if that’s the case and if financial issues do not make attendance unlikely or doubtful). If you earn additional awards or major-related accomplishments over the next few months, email your assigned admission counselor.

You could also follow up with a phonecall to admissions in a few weeks to tell them Dodge is your absolute first choice.

Hi Greenblue13,

I am sorry you did not get in immediately.

To put into context your wait listed" letter:

What are your weighted and unweighted GPAs? What are your top SAT and/or ACT scores? What EC’s/awards did you receive that are connected to the film production?

Thank you for a reply.

i was also wait listed… but im wondering if i should even accept because what are the odds and you don’t find out until mid may, which is after you have to make a decision with other colleges already…

gladiatorbird has good advice, they won’t look at your video. were you a production major? Did you have a second choice option, if not you might tell them you would take other majors besides production, which has a very low admit rate. Contact your assigned admission counselor, and convince them they are your absolute first choice.
Then, accept the strong possibility Dodge blew it, and learn to love your second choice, because who you are and how you approach your film school experience is way more important than the school at which you pursue your dreams.

Are you a very strong candidate academically or extracurricularly (awards), have you already been admitted to another film program? It seems like quite a few who were asked if they would like to join the waitlist are in that situation, where it appears likely that they wouldn’t accept an offer from Dodge.

They seem to want to hear your desire to be waitlisted / attend Chapman Dodge, and they only give you 10 days to do so, even though they mention they would look at the waitlist for admission in Mid-May. Mid-May is basically too late in most situations, most kids would have committed elsewhere. It is strange that these applicants weren’t just denied. If you are interested, send the email expressing your desire to attend Dodge and that it is your first choice (if it is) and hope for the best. Maybe some accepted students will send their regrets and spaces will open sooner than Mid-May.

If you do a video, put it up on Vimeo or YouTube and send them the link in your email. Not that they’ll look at it, but it may indicate to them a strong desire to attend Dodge.

You might also contact your admissions counselor at Chapman. Undergraduate Admission > Contact Us

Good luck!

Other schools may well do it, but I don’t believe that Dodge engages in the practice of wait-listing highly qualified applicants. To the contrary, Chapman very actively seeks to entice super-qualified applicants–with guaranteed merit and departmental scholarships (the opposite of the Tufts Syndrome). They appear to be doing their best to woo exceptional students away from schools like USC and NYU (and it’s working).

Dodge receives many strong applications, and some of those great students will inevitably be wait-listed due to an increasingly competitive pool.

If you look at the high stat kids who applied last year (my son was one of them, 2300 SAT, awards, etc), there is no evident trend toward wait-listing, but the opposite.

The portfolio/video essay is a wild card, of course: extremely important, but subjective. What one school sees as a fit, another may bump down a notch. Who knows!?

Best of luck, greenblue. I think that letting them know that you will come if admitted (if that’s the case) could make a difference.

I was waitlisted for Dodge yesterday. I e-mailed Chapman and said that I would like to be put on the waitlist. Chapman is my absolute first choice. Does anyone know what percentage of waitlisted kids were admitted in past years? I know it varies from year to year but if even a few were admitted it gives me hope.
