Here’s what the letter said when my son clicked, “Yes” for the Waitlist:

Thank you for confirming your desire to be on the UC Santa Barbara waitlist for Fall 2012. After May 1, we will know whether more spaces are available and whether more applicants can be admitted.

We plan to make all decisions about applicants who are on the waitlist by May 31. An email will alert you that the decision is available on this website. Applicants who receive an offer of admission will be sent a letter via U.S. Mail and will have one week to submit a Statement of Intent to Register (SIR).

Answers to some of your questions about the waitlist are available in our Waitlist FAQ’s.

If a space in the UCSB freshman class for Fall 2012 does not become available and attending UC Santa Barbara is still your goal, please consider applying for transfer admission as a junior. To learn more about transferring to UCSB, please read about our transfer selection process.

Again, thank you for your interest in UC Santa Barbara. We wish you every success in achieving your educational goals.

Sincerely,

Christine N. Van Gieson
Director of Admissions

Hey i was also waitlisted and this was one of my top choices! But what you said about wait listed applicants not being accepted is totally untrue!!! It appears at UCSB that MOST of their waitlisted applicants were accepted.
Go to their common data set and it tells you exact numbers
Just search UCSB common data set 2010-2011 (this was last years). They don’t have 2011-2012 yet.
According to the common data set:
Number of qualified applicants offered a placed on waiting list: 2,429
Number accepting a place on the waiting list: 1276
Number of wait-listed students admitted: 1264

Only 12 people weren’t admitted! This is VERY GOOD!! So keep hope everyone!! I know they accept a lot off the waitlist because a ton of people use UCSB as their safety for private schools, Berkley, LA, and even sometimes Davis and Irvine!
Good Luck everyone!

Thank you for the hope. This really motivates me. I just dislike the fact that if I am offered a position at ucsb I will jump at it no questions asked, however, it is after the May 1st deadline and most schools make you sign the Sir before that deadline and in addition make you give in a deposit.
