I know UVA accepts more applicants because they are a bigger school. Most of the kids at my school who got accepted to both W & M and UVA are male or URMs (they did have lower STATS than me). Others got waitlisted at both schools. I seem to be one of the very few who was waitlisted at W & M and accepted to UVA. Just wondering how many others got waitlisted at W & M but accepted to UVA?

It probably happens on occassion, especially for those who feel they are borderline applicants and since the quality of schools are similar. Also, you were at a slight disadvantage compared to the males in your school, since W&M gets like 63-65% female applicants but the actual acceptances are 50-51% female.

Edit: However, I also remember you saying you were hispanic. That's very odd that you still didn't get in, since W&M loves minorities

I didn't consider myself a borderline applicant at W & M. Do more males apply at UVA then females?

I did not check the Hispanic box because it wasn't right. I'm only 1/8 Hispanic, not enough to make a difference.

More females apply to UVA than males, but not quite the same discrepancy as W&M, and UVA more closely matches the acceptances to the applicants. It's like 56:44 female:male instead of 50:50 like W&M tries to do (I guess W&M gets higher yields on female as well). As for being a minority, personally I think it's respectable that you didn't do that. Lots of people get away with being a 'minority' when applying to college and basically getting advantages that they shouldn't have for the sake of a university's numbers.

Anyway, I actually know several people who were accepted to W&M but deferred from UVA, but none vice-versa. I'm sure there are people here who know at least a few, though.

You know one now! LOL. I agree, I haven't found any applicants who were deferred from W/M and accepted to UVA although I am sure they exist.

WL at WM and accepted to UVA here (but I'm a girl so who knows how I fit into your theory)

Around here in Virginia, W&M is considered harder to get into than UVA. It's smaller, so that might play a large part.

Where in VA? W&M and UVA are about equal in terms of selectivity, and size has nothing to do with it.

Maybe it seems more selective than UVA because generally more academic and less social people choose William and Mary, and I'm not stereotyping, it's just the environment. On PrincetonReview, William and Mary accepted 31% while UVA accepted 38% last year. That could be all due to numbers, again.

I'm in Southeastern VA

I'm in Southeastern VA too...I always thought of W&M as a good school, but I always thought UVA trumped W&M.

i think w&m is just the slightest bit better acedemically but overall uva is ranked better because the rankings factor in quality of life. the difference isnt big enough to make a difference though.

No. They are very, very equal at the undergraduate level, and at the graduate level, UVA is better. The rankings do not take quality of life into account.

^ True. UVA's graduate schools, larger endowment, and more research funding help the school ranked higher.

W&M and UVA are essentially academically equal institutions with fairly different campus(or "grounds") cultures. Some people would still have a great time at both schools, but most would fit in better at one or the other.

There are definitely people who get into UVA who don't get into W&M. And there are definitely people who get into W&M who don't get into UVA. It's just how it is.

W&M has a lower acceptance rate and higher SAT scores than UVa. Not sure about class rank but I believe W&M also wins on this metric.

There seems to be many people who got into W & M but not into UVA just as there were many who got into UVA but not into W & M.

In my own personal experience, it was W & M who choose to take the applicants with lower gpa, class rank and SAT scores over applicants with higher STATS. Perhaps W & M places a lot of emphasis on essays and those with the higher STATS (like me) had terrible essays. Who knows.

Although both schools have fairly equal admissions requirements, each school is clearly looking for different things in applicants.

"I did not check the Hispanic box because it wasn't right. I'm only 1/8 Hispanic, not enough to make a difference."

--> That is the problem with applications that have checkboxes to identify your race. What counts as black or hispanic - one doesn't know. It is not right to assume homogeneity in races.

W & M does have a bit lower acceptance rate and a VERY slight "advantage" in SAT score over UVA. However UVA has an overall higher GPA average and class ranking.

yea a girl from my school got into W&M but waitlisted at UVA
