waitlisted at W&M-- what does this mean for UVA?

So, I was waitlisted at W&M. I'm not that upset, honestly; it's a great school, but I live about five minutes away from the campus, so attending would be a little weird for me.

Does being waitlisted at W&M mean that UVA will outright reject me? I've heard from multiple sources that W&M is easier to get into, but I've also heard that W&M puts less emphasis on SAT scores, and my SAT scores are higher than both W&M's and UVA's average...

Anybody wanna help me out?

The W&M acceptance rate is actually lower. But you still have a chance at getting in! And I know quite a few Burg natives who still come to their hometown school, just as I know some Cville people who still go to UVA. I live a little over an hour away, but I have only gone home on official breaks, so just because you go here doesn't mean you have to go home all the time!

I was waitlisted at both schools (with numbers well above the average too), but W&M eventually extended me admission. Last year I don't think UVA accepted anyone off their waitlist, but things change every year; you never know!

i've heard it both ways, where people are accepted to one but not the other. I don't think there is anyway you could know...

Last Year:

UVA - 37% admission rate - Average SAT: 1330 (Math and Critical Reading)
WM - 33.7% admission rate - Average SAT: 1350 (Math and Critical Reading)

As SoccerGuy has said before, there isn't any direct correlation between admissions at UVA and WM. While both schools are selective, past statistics have shown that WM is actually more selective. As you have probably noticed by reading posts on this messageboard, there isn't really any rhyme or reason to why certain people were admitted and others were not. Many people who have the average stats and even higher than average stats are waitlisted and denied. I'm sure you still have a good chance of getting into UVA, but as you have seen nothing is a sure thing. Hopefully you will hear good news from UVA - as far as the waitlist at WM the amount of people taken off the waitlist is traditionally pretty low, but if you show some interest it could improve your chances (just ask HeretoHelp). Simply put, there are people who are accepted to UVA and not W&M and there are also people who are accepted to W&M and not UVA. Another thing to remember is that W&M applications are up this year higher than they have ever been and it is likely the admission percentage will drop to at least 32%. I think the admissions committee at W&M had to learn last year how to deal with the volatile effect of many EA programs being dropped at prestigious schools and changed its strategy this year by admitting more EA applicants this year than usual (leaving less spots to fill in next years class during regular admission.) Since it sounds like you are ready to get out of town, maybe you will be accepted to UVA and things will work out for the best. Best of luck to you in the rest of the admissions cycle.

I'm in the same boat as you are! Its weird because I thought I would get into WM over UVa.

I was rejected today by W&M. Uva is my dream school but now I feel like I have no chance whatsoever.

I think that letters were sent out alphabetically to instate stuents so only ppl with last names at the beginning of the alphabet got their decisions. Does that seem to be true?

W&M is more selective than UVirginia. You still have a good chance there. Good luck.

LS4EVER, That doesn't seem to be true among kids at my school (in NoVa). My last name happens to start with "A," but I know people w/ the the first letter of their last name "R" who have already received their decisions.

LS4EVER, my last name starts with an "M" and I got my decision yesterday (waitlist)

I'm curious whether any instate students have gotten acceptance letters yet other than Monroe scholar invites. Seems like so far all we're hearing from are Monroe Scholars or waitlisted students.

parent2009, I am from Northern Virginia and I have many friends who got in. I'm pretty sure everyone at my school who applied has heard back.

Thanks. Guess we'll know soon enough.

LS4EVER, my last name starts with Y and I got my letter on Saturday (I technically opened the mailbox on Sunday, but since there's no mail service then...) so I doubt it was alphabetical. Others with last names C, H and R heard too. I live in Northern Virginia if that helps. Good luck to everyone still waiting (:

I'm still not sure if I'm applying to both...I want to apply to W&M ED...but I really need to ace the rest of this year. I'm really just going to cram hard for the ACT...the thought of so many people applying scares me. I want to go to W&M so badly...it's the only school besides UVA in VA that has the programs I want...-sigh-

I keep wondering what I truly need to do to get in...I've got summer interview, ace ACT, ace AP tests, keep 4.0 average, get great recommendations, dominate essays, and have concrete EC's that demonstrate leadership, specifics interests, and volunteer work.

But really...what else can I do to really stand out from the thousands of other kids who do the exact same thing? College admissions are so frustrating...I'll be so disappointed if I don't get in...

I know several kids, including family members, who were wait listed or rejected by W&M but got into UVA so keep a good thought.

Tribe1693 already gave my speech on the topic, haha.

There are people who only get into W&M
There are people who only get into UVA
There are people who get into both
There are people who get into neither

It's been several years, but our oldest daughter was waitlisted at William and Mary and admitted to U-Va. We're hoping the same thing happens with our youngest daughter, who also just found out she was waitlisted. She much prefers U-Va but still applied to both, as many in state students do.
