I don't want to come off as arrogant or cocky, but me and my guidance counselor agreed GW was a safety for me. I was waitlisted though, and I really don't know why. Is there a chance it's because I listed schools like Princeton and Georgetown as other places I'm applying too, and they wanted to protect their yield numbers? What other reasons could there be? I'm really shaken up by this especially finding out only 6 days before Ivy decisions.

Congrats to everyone who was accepted though, GW is a great school.

When are guidance counselors going to get the message? GW is on the lookout for people using them as safeties. They don’t want those people. They want people who want to go to GW.

but i dont understand how they knew!! my essay was so sincere!!! i talked about how much i loved DC I just dont understand this! how can I get into any Ivys or Georgetown if I cant even get to GW? this is a disaster

As anyone can see, GW’s admissions are all over the place. They want people who want them. Regular decision, they are not a safety for anyone. I’m going out on a limb to say that putting Princeton and Gtown was a bad idea.

Please don’t freak out. There could be a million reasons. I see you reached pretty high in your college choices but dont let a waitlist by your safety make you think you will be rejected by all your other colleges…Sometimes the process makes no sense to us mortals. Hang in there an see what April 1 brings.

Adcoms make mistakes…One reader might find your essay deep and meaningful while another might find it mundane…One schools decision has no bearing on another school.

Your guidance counselor made a mistake by telling you GW was a safety. Looks at the Reg. decisions for the last few years.Probably a safety ED, but not a safety RD.

How can something with only 40% acceptance rate (ish) be a safety for anyone? Something with an 80% acceptance rate is a safety. I’m sorry you didn’t get in though :(. Hopefully you will be lucky enough and good enough to get in to some of the Ivies you applied to. Good luck and maybe you will get off the wait list in the future?

I warned you back in November on this board that this is exactly what would happen. Your wording in discussing GW revealed lack of interest in the school compared to Georgetown. You really shouldn’t be surprised. Good luck to you on your acceptances to your other schools. Hope it works out.

Don’t sweat your other decisions! GW was a “safety” for me too, and while I really do think it’s an awesome school and has a lot to offer, admissions saw right through me. They want students who want to be there. I don’t want to be there. They know that, I know that, we move on with our lives. A lot of schools know when they’re your “safeties” or when your interest is insincere, so why would they waste their time accepting you if you have no intention of attending?

On the same subject, does anyone know how to reply to the waitlist? I checked the site and I couldn’t find a link.

" I listed schools like Princeton and Georgetown as other places I’m applying too,"

I have to agree with schmohawk in post #4. Although colleges sometimes ask you to list other schools you are applying to, it’s always best to leave that answer blank.

Never admit to any college what other colleges you are applying to. It’s none of their freaking business. Make something up or claim to be completely undecided about where else you might apply.

yea it was dumb of me to do that but GW doesn’t need to be so insecure. they should believe top applicants want to come to their school, instead of messing with our heads like this. i guess that makes me insecure, but this is so unexpected and it’s really not right.

my friend had a 3.9 and a 32 and they were flat out denied, not even waitlisted…but my other friend has a 3.4 and a 29 and they got into NYU…admissions are crazy all over the place.

GW has a way to “sense” who is applying to the school for safety reasons, therefore, the majority of applicants who were accepted were having the intention of attending.

if i decide to accept a spot on the waitlist, could that jeopardize my spot at any colleges i may be accepted to in the future? or is there no commitment in taking a waitlist spot?
