I applied to UCSD as a Bio major, and found out today that I was waitlisted. I'm supposed to wait until May 8th to see if I can get in. I thought I had pretty good stats. 4.0+ weighted GPA, 2310 SAT, 720 Bio, 750 Math IIC and good AP scores (5 on Calc AB and 4's on English Lit and Bio). What is the general acceptance rate after being waitlisted? Does anyone know? And did UCSD completely cut out the winter quarter acceptance for this year?

Another thing: I got into UC Irvine, but my dad would rather have me go to a community college and transfer than to go to UC Irvine for 4 years. I'm about to turn in my registration to community college, but I'm not sure that I will be allowed to go to UCSD if I'm accepted in May if I'm already registered at a CCC. Does anyone know if it's possible to register to UCSD after being registered at a CCC? The information site about waitlists at UCSD said that I could submit my SIR to another UC and repeal it if I got accepted to UCSD. Does this apply to CCC's as well? Can I repeal my registration at a CCC to go to UCSD? Thank you so much!

Geez, your father’s kind of controlling.

kjk
you should consult with your school counselor or contact the UCSD and ccc admissions people for such a important decision.

Assuming you are a CA resident and talking about CA community colleges. Community colleges are very free form, one of the best education resources. Myself, my husband and 2 of our kids have taking classes at several community colleges at various times for serious academic courses or just for fun.

There is no fee to apply. You just get your name in the system. If you don’t end up enrolling in any class, you don’t need to do anything. You pay when you enroll in classes. If change your mind, you need to drop the class by a certain date or it will be on your record.

I am pretty sure you can apply for community college as a backup without any consequences whatsoever. But to be sure, you can call UCSD admission and ask.

If you want to apply, do it early. Class enrollment is by seniority. For new students, first come first serve.

UCI is a great school, in a nice area with a beautiful campus. Have you and your dad visited before? If not, perhaps you can go for a tour or go to college day.

I agree with busymei note that UCI is in a high rent district.

No one knows what will happen with the UC waitlists, since it’s new this year (well, ok, Irvine, experimented last year). But given the budget cutbacks and UC’s desire to enroll rich OOS kids (instead of you), it is impossible to guess what will happen until the OOS kids decline.

Yes, you can submit an SIR to Irvine and still sign up for a juco. Note, last year UC did not refund the deposit if accepted off the WL to Irvine.

How the heck did you get waitlisted by UCSD with those stats?!? That makes NO sense! Appeal your decision to be honest…

@busymei: Thank you so much for the information on the community colleges! Yes, I am in California. I did some more research online, and I don’t see why my registering at a CCC would affect my ability to submit an SIR if I’m accepted later, so I already registered. I’ve heard that getting the classes you need at CCC’s are going to be harder than ever this year.

@bluebayou: I can understand the stuff about the budget cuts and wanting more money from out-of-state applicants. I didn’t ask for any financial aid though, since my family has a pretty high income, but I guess that didn’t help at all.

@motion12345: My dad wants me to appeal, but there isn’t any new or compelling information that I think would change their minds. I think I just didn’t have enough points based on their system. Even with my GPA, I’m not an ELC student, so no points with that, and I’m Asian, and not poor at all. Plus, I’ve lived a pretty blessed life, so there were no personal hardships or extreme circumstances that could help with points either. I did neglect to put in info about my parents’ divorce, but I don’t see how that would make them want to take me.

You race shouldn’t have bearing, and mentioning divorce after the fact isn’t compelling in that it didn’t cause you hardship. If you were my kid, I’d be packing you off to UCI. I think it is an advantage to go right to a 4 year if you get into one as good as that.

Yeah UCI is a really good school, especially in Biology. Couple that with a beautiful campus and a very safe city, youve got a real winner. But if your heart is set with UCSD, I suggest you talk with your counselor, like helixmom said.

how do you know if your on the waiting list or not?

andy, go check your admissions on triton page and it’ll tell you

@katiejk, go the UCSD sub forum, there is a thread for waitlisted. i already thought mine and a couple other’s was utter and complete bs, and yours just furthers my bs-calling.

call in to their admission office and demand your # of points. im gonna do that on monday. I got UC irvine with CHP, and my dad says if ucsd wont take me then F*** them and go to UCI with the perks.

@brownparent, race SHOULD not have a bearing (partly because of the passed prop in the 90s), but i am 99.9999% sure it does, whether blatantly or subconsciously through subjective or “holistic” review. I live in san jose, and i think just last year, they (edit:San Jose State University) announced their plans to get more pacific islanders enrolled, even if their apps arent as strong as others… the regent’s decision to meet with the UCSD BSU and consider their absurd demands just furthers my bs-calling.

wow, your stats are great. You should’ve gotten in.

Your stats are amazing. I have no idea why you didn’t get in. A girl at my school got in with an 1860 SAT and 3.8 UW GPA.

Just as a side note, it is possible to transfer from one UC to another if you’re determined. I’ve heard that sometimes it’s easier to get in as a UC-UC transfer if you have good grades because they know you can handle the workload. So don’t throw out UCI just yet.

But you haven’t been flat-out rejected, which means you still have a chance! Good luck :)

Agree with TsangBokyan about calling UCSD Monday. Find out this year’s point cut off and how manyy points you have. Make sure you points are calculated correctly. See if they can give you any more info about how the wait list works and your chances.

wow, this is just ridiculous… someone like you should not be waitlisted…
i was mad about my situation but hearing yours just makes me ****ed.
your so much better than half of the people i know that got in…
i really just wonder what in the world they were looking for this year…
it amazes me.
i’m also waitlisted… i just wonder what the chances are of getting in :/

oh btw just wondering,
did you apply to ucla or ucb?
cuz i think with your stats you shouldve gotten into at least one of those schools…

Id have my gc call. Your stats are too high for waitlist. Youlre too smart for a cc. Go to uci if you don’t get in. Where else did you apply.
