Waitlisted U Mich class of 2021

@MedSciBud They don’t give you a rank on the waitlist. http://blog.brightstorm.com/what-a-waitlist-really-means/

It does not really mean they don’t have a priority order. It is certainly not a lucky draw. Part of the reason for not having a rank is that they would not know the class composition until after May 1. The school wants to build a balanced class, for instance, they they may find they need to fill the remaining class with more science than literature oriented students after May 1.

@billcsho - thank you, but even that article states the wait-lists are not ranked. I do not work for the admissions office, so I have no clue how they use the WL. Anyways, guess all that besides the point. Guess the point you were trying to make is that there is no point in providing additional information at the WL level. Again, I am not an AO, so I don’t know how this will work, but as a common man, I would assume that if they had 2 seats to fill from WL and they had x number of students, of which one has shown more interest and provided additional info to support their fit to the school, if I were an AO, I would pick that person. No?

Express continue interest is fine but don’t be too pushy. If you do have significant update information like winning a major award, do let them know and that may help. Otherwise, it may have an adverse effect. The question is, do you have additional information to be provided that is really worth to mention and may change the result. Note that they do not have that much time to re-evaluate each application between May 2 and making WL admission offer.

@cactus1 besides awards and the fact that you would 100% attend what else did you include? Do you think it’s too late to send mine? Do you think the letter is what got you in off the waitlist or was it something else?

I called the admissions office awhile back, and the lady who answered told me that the WL is NOT ranked. And she also told me that once they have an idea of who didn’t except they will accept certain people “in order to maintain the diversity” they wish to have on their campus.

^which means they have several mini standby lists depending on what they are looking for. It is not realistic to think they don’t know who they will call next. They just have several options based on what they are looking for.

deferred waitlisted then accepted to LSA.
after a deep consideration, declined the offer just now

when did you receive your acceptance?

@Ruta 2 weeks ago

If I haven’t heard by now, is it too late?

@daw0731 It is not too late if you are asking if they might still contact names off waitlist. It is a rolling process, not one-time. Good luck!

Yes, remember that some students accepted off the waitlist will reject their offer, so it takes a while for them to send out more waitlist offers.

@Eeeee127 @SeekingWisdom If I contacted my regional officer would that help or no?

You could send in a wailist letter of interest saying you would 100% attend if admitted off the waitlist but its a little late right now.

@Eeeee127 who would I send it to, I emailed my regional officer but is there anyone else I should contact? and mail or email?

just your regional officer would be fine @daw0731

@Eeeee127 did writing such a letter help you or anyone you know? And do you know what they look for when they admit students from the waitlist?

@daw0731 I know it helps to show interest if you are waitlisted. You can also update on any achievements and send in your second semester senior grades to show improvement. Waitlist is tough though and you can always transfer.

For many highly selective Universities and Colleges, incl. UMich, Transfer Acceptance Rates are comparable with First-Year Admission Rates. Hence ‘always’ may be a relative term in this context.

Hi guys,
I was waitlisted too, College of Engineering. I’m an out of state candidate (actually live in India :(( ) so I emailed a person in charge of Indian prospectives about whether I could send in my final grades and a few projects I did. She said they didn’t require any additional information, but I mentioned in my email itself that I scored 93% (high jump from my 60-70% average before). UMich is really my chance to come back to the US since I got accepted in Wisconsin-Madison but my dad thinks it’s too expensive and not worth the money. :(( Im a legacy as well ( but Ross school and not coe) so I hope that helps. I’m just here to wallow in misery with you guys :((((((
