@Jiyongie: Have you accepted admission to Wisconsin-Madison, which is a highly ranked National University as well? Chances of UMich Waitlist Admission are remote at best, at this stage. Best of luck!
@hpcsa: Yeah, I did accept the offer but I had a huge fight with my dad cause he said it was just a backup for Incase I don’t get into an Indian college sigh
@Jiyongie, One thing is sure: if you were ultimately admitted into UMich from the Fall 2017 waitlist, Cost of Attendance as International Student would certainly not be any lower than Wisconsin-Madison. So cost would not be a differentiator between these two highly ranked National Universities. While it may be an emotional issue, due to Business Graduate legacy status in your family, it still might not be right for you. Ultimately, it always is a joint family decision, due to the significant cost involved between college attendance in the US vs. your home country, yet my feeling is that your parents might somewhat underrate Wisconsin-Madison and the good Engineering education it provides.
@hspca: you’re totally right. the issue at hand here is that my father doesn’t believe the Wisconsin is a very prestigious school; at least not as prestigious as Michigan. The costs to attend both are very similar as an out.of state candidate but my dad simply thinks it’s worth spending that much money only for what he thinks is a worthwhile college. I wish someone would convince him that Wisconsin is pretty good too cause it doesn’t seem that I can. We’ll see.
@Jiyongie, I’d suggest to introduce objective data into the conversation. You possibly may want to start with these:
http://www.kiplinger.com/tool/college/T014-S001-kiplinger-s-best-values-in-public-colleges/index.php
Based on price-value considerations, which is what your dad seems to focus on, Kiplinger’s a highly regarded and objective financial advising magazine, rates University of Michigan at # 13 for Out-of-State students such as yourself, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison at # 18, which I personally would regard as very close together. Makes sense? This describes in detail the methodology: http://www.kiplinger.com/article/college/T014-C000-S002-how-we-rank-the-best-college-values-2017.html
Don’t give up too easily!
@hpcsa: oh god, you’re awesome! It’s great to meet such nice people over the internet; thank you so much for helping me! Bitersweet news- I got into a college called SSN in my city, for computer ecience- it’s an extremely coveted college and my dad’s over the moon that I got into such an exclusive place. I told him that we still have to wait for UMich and deliberate and decide and he agrees. I will definitely use those websites you recommended to convince him to send me to the US. Thanks so much and of course I won’t give up easily :)))
@Jiyongie, If SSN, their COE and the CS program is an international recognized and fully accredited institution, you could always complete your 4 years of undergraduate studies there, get your B.S. in India and then continue your graduate studies @ Stanford, Purdue, UMich or any other top rated Engineering/CS Program in the US. Whichever way, your success will much more depend on you personally, rather than your specific undergraduate university or college. Just make sure, as mentioned above, it is recognized internationally and fully accredited. Very best of luck!
PS: The ‘Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College of Engineering’ seems to be ranked as # 24 of Engineering Schools in India by http://www.outlookindia.com/magazine/story/top-100-engineering-colleges-in-2017/298916
This is very good - congratulations to your admission!
@hpcsa: yeah, it’s a very good college but I can’t stand to be stuck in India for another 4 years. I’ve been itching to get out ever since I moved here, and I worked relatively hard while trying to get into a us college and do well over here, so when the opportunity is right in my grasp, it would be a pity if I didn’t use it! I’m still going to try to convince him to send me there, but SSN isn’t a bad fallback option. It’s actually owned by Shiv Nadar, the chairman of HCL!
I hope everything will work out for you, in line with your college plans. Let us know if we can provide any additional support. Best of luck!
Thank you so much! You’re a great person :x
@Jiyongie Pretty surprised to see someone else who moved to India from USA and is trying to go back for college. I’m doing Computer Science too, what a coincidence.
@smiles2324: Haha. Where in India are you from?
@Jiyongie I’m from Chennai. What about you?
@smiles2324: where are you headed for college?
@smiles2324 : Oh my God! Me too!! Hey, did you, by chance, attend ahaguru IITJEE classes (with Balaji sir)?
How about we keep this as a waitlisted U of M thread and not an Indian reunion
@samum99: How about you let other waitlisted UMich students communicate with each other as they wish? Ever heard of freedom of speech, Einstein?
What they are saying is that lots of kids have tagged this post to get notified when there is a post to see what news is here…so yes, please stay on topic. You can message each other though:)
has anyone heard any denies from the waitlist yet?
