Waitlisted

Okay, so after the long wait, my D was waitlisted. UDel is on of her top choices, is there any chance she gets in? Any advice on how we should proceed?

can u please post your daughters stats if you feel comfortable doing that

1190/1810
3.5 GPA school does not weight
OOS CT
12 varsity letters
Various leadrship
Accounting

Have one of her teachers mail another recommendation letter and have your daughter call and tell udel that they are her first choice. It worked for quite a few people I know.

Thanks, she will do that.

My daughter was in the same situation two years ago. We immediately returned the form that we needed to complete to remain on the list (I think we even sent it back the same day). She got in May 2nd, the day after deposits were due. Yes, we lost our deposit at the school she selected when she was waitlisted, but well worth it. I think there is a very good chance of getting off after our experience and reading the posts last year. Stay in touch with them and ANY updates to her application (awards or accolades) between now and then, shoot them a quick note. BEST OF LUCK!!

Don’t think my son is going there even with the scholarship they offered – so go for it – I’m sure there will be spots opening up

^^does anyone agree/think that she should possibly change to undecided?..I think accounting is looking for higher stats (especially SAT’s)…

it’s worth calling about that-because they do not really have to declare a major until sophomore year.

They accepted a lot of students off the waitlist last year.

According to the UDel Common Data Set the statistics for the waitlist for last year are:

Number of qualified applicants offered a place on waiting list 1,952
Number accepting a place on the waiting list 857
Number of wait-listed students admitted 285
Number of wait-listed students enrolled 105

It also says that they don’t rank the wait list, so it must be first-come first served.

The full dataset is here: http://www.udel.edu/IR/cds/cds1112.pdf

I would also recommend that when you send in the form you might also include a brief letter (no more than a page) delineating that UD is your first choice and also including some additional comments about your reasons why and, as appropriate, what you feel you could contribute (I don’t mean monetarily) to the unversity community. Some people did this last year and did feel it helped them get in (obviously no guarantees).

I would caution you about pursuing the change in major recommendation. While it might work (actually it did work for a friend of my D who was waitlisted and had planned to change her major anyway, and they accepted her the next day after she contacted them) it may be extremely difficult to transfer into accounting from undecided (this is a very popular major at UD). So if you are considering doing this just be aware of the risks.

If I remember correctly they began to accept students off the wait list last year in late March/early April.

Perhaps you might consider finding out out who your area admission rep is. Call or email them. If you really want it badly, ask if you can stop by for a meeting/interview. That kind of effort might really get noticed. Market yourself, without being too pushy.

Good Luck

is anyone else still waiting on the mail/ their portal didn’t get updated at all? feeling this is a sign of rejection

ipodnano i’m in the same boat as you. literally been depressed and anxious all week. as much as i love udel, i wish they would stop playing games.

my daughter still hasn’t heard anything either. she is a mess and I wish UD would straighten out their admissions policy.

That’s our position exactly. Made worse by other kids at her school, who live in our neighborhood, having been accepted. And yet we’ve gotten nothing.

My daughter just got her rejection letter yesterday. Portal never changed. She emailed admissions all her info and they emailed back saying don’t worry, nothing to be nervous about, just technical problems. Got her hopes up- she figured they looked her up- and then yesterday, the bad news. What a horrible system. Pretty scary such a large university can’t get their computers to work !!!

Marshalls44 - I read all of your posts throughout the week and had the same experiences you did. Our dealings with UDEL have been interesting to say the least - Admissions needs to realize that in this day and age - word gets out and share ALL news good or bad via the internet. When I used the Live Chat access, I was informed that College Confidential spreads rumors and that ALL decisions were mailed out. Additionally, we had a very unprofessional reply back from one of the athletic coaches via email. My son sent an email inquiring about trying out for a team at UDEL. The Coach replied back with,“Do you expect me to try out 200 hundred kids?” That was early on in our process, so we never visited the school becuase that tone left us wondering. Our son has been accepted elsewhere and we are still waiting on other schools to reply. This was his first rejection and I am sure there will be others. I hope your child lands in a place that is just right. This is quite a rollarcoaster ride, and I get to do it all again in a couple of years with child #2. UDEL will not be on the list! Best of Wishes finding just the right school to call home.

@ marshall 44. Same thing happened to my daughter. Admissions said not to worry etc. This is our 3rd kid so we are pretty realistic regarding chances to get in. She got into Penn State, Uconn, U of MD and even U of Wisconsin. Delaware ranked below these and we honestly thought this was a slam dunk and were shocked that she wasn’t even wait listed. I sent an email to admissions as her SAT scores, ECs etc. were all way above the average. I received an email back from a student. The whole thing was very unprofessional. It is a pretty school, but I am OK that it didn’t work out. Best of luck to you! I actually really like UMASS Amherst so would be happy to see her at any of the other schools.
