Hey, I just received my waitlist decision from Rice, and I'm pretty confused. Looking at the Official Accepted thread I'm pretty sure I have the same if not better then most of the kids on it.

Also, I (and many other people of course) had my application fee waivered because of my AP scores. Because of this I thought Rice would automatically accept me. Is there anyone else out there who got their application fee waivered but got waitlisted?

It seems a bit farfetch’d that you were entitled an admission simply because you had an application fee waived. Furthermore, test scores, GPA etc. are simply guidelines, not crucial determining factors in an acceptance. It that were the case then every person with a 33+ ACT and 3.8 GPA and above would get into the school of their dreams. Essays, reccomendations, and the ability to standout among one’s peers is, in the end, what makes or breaks a decision.

I received a letter in the mail. I took eight different AP’s and by the end of my junior year. So based on my scores (mostly 5’s a couple 4’s) Rice sent me a letter saying it would waive my application fee. It’s cause of this letter that I even first heard of Rice and I applied.

hi, my son also had his admission fee waived (his SAT scores were 780 math, 760 CR, 710 writing, he had high 700s on his SAT II tests, and he had straight 5s on 7 AP tests). However, he was flat-out rejected. Rice can’t decide whether it wants you until it sees the whole application.

I also got my application fee waived because of high AP scores (same e-mail that you mentioned), also got waitlisted. I don’t know why you assumed that this was a sign of “automatic acceptance.” :
