I'm an incoming freshman and I'm waitlisted in 3 out of 4 of my discussion classes: Econ 1, Math 20C, and Hild 2A. However, I am #1, #2, and #1 on these waitlists (class sizes 68, 33, 37). There are still open sections but the professors teaching and the times are undesirable. Should I take the risk and stay on the waitlists? I'm so nervous right now..

You’ll probably get in, but just have a plan B in case you don’t. Students are more likely to drop or change their schedule when classes start, but you never know. Wait it out and see what happens. Know what classes/discussion times you want to switch to if no one drops, and keep an eye on those classes in case they fill up too.

My daughter said the rule is 10%, that means 10% will end up dropping the class. She also said you could enroll up to 19.5 units.

I think you’re likely to get in but beware that you might be #1 in a section of 20-30 people rather than a class with a larger number of students. I feel like if your section is really early in the morning or late at night, there are usually less number of students wanting to get into these sections. But I would still say stick with it since all other classes that you need are probably full already. Also, it might be a good idea to speak with your professor at the end of your first lecture and ask him about the waitlist thing. He might direct you to one of the TAs and they can help put you in even though the class is already full. I know this is possible because it happened before in my writing class and an art history class.
