About the whole "waitlisting" system...

Is this how wait-listing works?

When I'm wait-listed for a certain class, I still attend it until the Thursday of the second full week of the school year, and during that time, I basically hope that somebody drops the class and gives me a spot so I can be in the class?

I also heard that the rule is: 10% of the class will drop

If someone was number 3 in some wait-listed section, how likely are his/her chances of ultimately getting into the class he/she wanted? (class size: around 30)

^Yes to all of the above, and I would say you had a good chance in that waitlist position (but remember no one knows for sure)

and we can just show up and crash the class right? and we can take a seat right? hopefully that it would be ok haha

lol I don’t think you’re allowed to “crash” the class.

You’re definitely allowed to crash classes. You’d probably have to let the TA know if it’s a small discussion, but in the big lectures, no one notices and no one cares.

If my options are down to either entering a class with open spots or waitlisting as 3rd in a discussion of 30 people, which one should I go for?

waitlisting scenarios which is allowed ? –

example 1-- Sign for Chem 6a under two differant profs ( lectures) - one at a preferred time but waitlisted, and the other confirmed but at a time you don’t like. If the wait list clears you drop out of the other. Does this mean you have to attend both lectures for the first two weeks until everything gets sorted out.

example 2 — Sign up for Chem 6a under just one lecture ( prof) but under two differant discussions (TA) - one waitlisted ( preferred time) and one confirmed. If the wait list clears continue with that. Do I have to attand both TA sessions for the first two weeks until everything gets sorted out.

Finally – If I plan to sign up for 4 classes , but one of them is waitlisted, should I register for a fifith one to be on the safe side and drop it later on if I get into the waitlisted class. Will the registaration system allow me to register for 20 credits as an entering freshman.

you cant sign up for two spots of the same class.

greenfield,
all wrong. you can’t do the first 2 scenarios. you have to take chem 6a with one professor at one discussion time. you can’t sign up for two different 6a professors or two different discussions for the same class.

you can register for a maximum of 4 classes (assuming one class = 4 units). the 5th one will tip you over the unit limit - you can only register for 19.5 units worth of classes at this time. so 4 * 5 classes = 20 units which exceeds the max.

so even if we waitlist we can still attend the discussion?

92faim - Thanks, I don’t have to many options here since my registration is two days away and my recommended classes are getting filled up. I am a entering Freshman for EE. ECE 15 has only one section and it is already full with a wait list of 12. Chem 6A and Math 20C I may be able to get in for one of those early morning classes.

One other question – Since I cannot sign up for more than 4 classes, can I just attend a waitlisted class without registering for it and wait and see if seats open up. If a seat opens up I can drop another class and sign up for this. Do I have 2 weeks to add a class?

can we enroll in one class (not waitlist, not prof we want, nor time) and later if a prof/time that was previously waitlisted unwaitlists, can we switch?

@greenfield
I’m in the same situation as you. EE already have about 10% of the class waitlisted and i need that class for my major. I dont know what i should do =

@GravityxZero35 and chowsx

Yes.

thats cool
then wouldnt the discussion be crowded?

^Potentially. A lot of kids don’t go to discussion anyway so that would usually leave seats open for waitlisted kids.

The Math 20C course I was looking at is waitlisted by 9+ people lol I shouldn’t expect to get into that class should I? How big are the classes?

@spacedog
I think it says the size of the class in the planner. From what others on the forum say, only about 10% of the class will drop. So unless the class size is 90, i dont think you’ll get in.

greenfield,
I should’ve said this earlier:

despite the 19.5-unit cap now, starting September 20 (first day of quarter) you’re allowed to waitlist more classes. so while you currently can only waitlist/register for 4 classes, by the time quarter begins you can reg/waitlist for more classes. (about 10% drop the class, so #1, #2, or #3 on a waitlist for a discussion of size 30 is good). do know that even though you are free to waitlist more classes, your 19.5 cap has become a 22-unit cap. so you only have room to waitlist 1 class if you have 4 already (2 if you have 3, and so on).

Then, you would do exactly what you said you wanted to do (sitting in on a discussion) but instead of adding the class when spots open up, do that by waitlisting beforehand so when spots open up, you automatically get taken in.

btw, yes, you have 2 weeks to add/drop classes if 5 becomes too much or w/e.

so on September 20, you should quickly log onto TritonLink and waitlist (if chances are good), then sit in on lectures/discussions until you hear back from the department regarding your status.

best of luck getting your classes! it’s ok, I think all of our schedules suffer a bit as freshmen :P

EDIT: also, even if your discussion ends up being at a poor time or w/e, you can always attend other discussions. I heard TAs rarely take attendance or even care. but if one discussion is far better than others, it might get too crowded and they’ll have to eject you (haha). and of course sometimes profs give quizzes during the corresponding section; you better attend your own section in that case.

I also feel like more ECE 15 sections should open up, so look out for that.

I figured that to be the case AndrewL… Gah, this is frustrating. I ended up waitlisting for another Math 20C class lol but I’m 3rd so I’m hoping I can get in.
