Waitlists and FA

Do people who get accepted off the waitlist usually get less FA than those who were conventionally accepted? Or would it be the same?

It depends on the school and your financial situation. If you are entitled to federal aid; Pell and stafford loans, you will always receive this aid some schools ate need aware/need sensitive in the wait list process. This means that the ability to pay will be a factor in whether or not you get off of the wait list. Schools with large endowments and generous aid policies will give you the same aid if you are admitted Ed, RD or off the waitlist.

It’s that old YMMV. Most schools, even those who guarantee to meet 100% need to students often make exceptions for transfer, international and wait listed students. You have to ask each school what the situation is, and it could vary as to what 's left in financial aid for those schools that do not have a hard and fast policy.

However, I remember a few years ago, someone I know who was wavering about even encouraging his DD to join the waitlist of her first choice school because, she was accepted with a good aid package from another school and things were pretty set. The school where the DD was waitlisted did not even a need blind school in terms of admissions but did meet full need to those who were accepted. The Dad called and asked about fin aid for WL students and was told that the guarantee did not apply. So though the DD did end up sending in the WL card, no one, my self included, thought that anything would come of it.

Well, she was accepted and got full need met off the Waitlist! Though the school did not guarantee anything and is even need aware for admissions, for whatever reason, she hit the jackpot. So who can say?

But, yes, the pickings are usually slimmer off the wait list except for those school that have policies that guarantee to meet full need for those who clear the wait list.

Some schools are “need aware” for their waitlists. What schools are you concerned about?

@sybbie - Are you thinking about dinner? You said off the waitstaff. Thanks for my chuckle of the day, especially since the Colbert Report is on hiatus this week.

Thanks!

@mom2collegekids: This is hypothetically speaking. This scenario applies to my remaining colleges I haven’t heard from, all of which are in the top 20, meet full need, and are known to give generous aid. I just need to see what might happen if I get waitlisted into any one of them and if I somehow get accepted off that waitlist.
