Hey all - I applied regular decision to UMCP and got a bill a long time ago saying that I owe around -54 dollars. I had no idea what this meant, but my parents and I assumed I paid the application fee twice by accident. We didn't really care to call, but my mom finally called them today and asked if I accidentally paid twice.

Once my mom asked, the financial office said they had waived my application fee and that they will send the money back to my mother (I didn't pay twice :P). Now the question is, why did I get my application fee waived? I'm kinda curious to know what the reason is so just wondering if anyone else is/was in this situation :P

Could I possibly be getting some type of scholarship (is that even possible for a regular applicant?) Thanks for the feedback!

what the hell? you owed 54 dollars, how does that mean they owed YOU 54 dollars?

No no, the bill said "-54 dollars" (I didn't know I could possibly owe a negative amount)...

The negative 54 dollars meant they were giving the application fee back to me

a lot of people get it waived. There is that distingushed scholars thing(i think that is what it is called). It has nothing to really do with scholarships from the school.

Well, this is the other thing. I'm a moco resident and I did not get maryland distinguished scholar or national merit scholar (the 2 conditions that allow you to get your application fee waived)

To be honest I don't think it is any type of scholarship. but if it is congrats. I don't know why you would have the fee waved. I would e-mail them or call them up.

Alright, thanks for the responses. I'll update when I found out..
