Waiving school insurance

I have a question for those who waived their insurance. What insurance company do you have? A lot of the places I've looked are not qualify for the University criteria...

We have Blue Cross Blue Shield. Not sure what you mean. As long as you have some type of insurance, you should be able to waive it.
Plus the most of the basic things at the health center is free for students.

Well, it says the plan must be at least $250,000 per condition and the insurance company I have only has a maximum of $50,000 per condition.

suhstacy,

You are right. There is a list of criteria that your insurance plan must meet in order for you to waive out of the NYU health insurance policy for students. It appears that you have to be enrolled with a company that provides enough coverage. Our plan is the NYS Empire Plan/ United Healthcare that provides very good coverage. It appears milkandsugar and her D are also with a larger company.

To evolving and milkandsugar,

The school automatically put me in the comprehensive plan which is about $2000, but I’m planning on changing it to a basic plan which is about $1300. So, do you guys pay less than the school insurance?

When you waive out, it means you have other insurance to cover you should you have to get medical treatment. Then you no longer have to buy into the plan NYU has set up for “uninsured” or “underinsured” students.

Thus, we pay $0 for the school insurance plan, given that we have our own coverage that is acceptable to NYU.

Suhstacy,

Maybe I interpreted your question wrong. Are you asking what we pay for our health insurance? I gather people like milkandsugar and I have employer sponsored plans.

I basically pay a little over $100 per month for health insurance to cover my entire family, the discounted rate courtesy of my ex-employer, who picks up the tab for the larger portion of my health insurance premium. My S is covered under my plan until he is 24 or 25.

I have an employer sponsored plan that I also pay into approx 125.00 per month. I don’t even know what my insurance covers per each condition. I have always waived it. If you look at the website, there are many services that are no cost to students. Appointments and basic lab tests are free. Walk-ins have a co pay of 10-15.00 dollars. That is with or without NYU insurance. Even 10 sessions of mental health counseling are no cost.
