Hi!
I'm going to NYU this Fall, and I am looking for health plan options. I heard that the NYU plan ($1614 for 8/21/12-8/20/13) is a rip-off, and I am trying to find options for me as an individual. The problem is that I'm am only 17 right now, and won't turn 18 until October, but my health plan needs to be in effect 8/21/12
I live in Massachusetts, and I can't use my parents' insurance because it doesn't cover NY--if anyone has any advice, I would greatly appreciate it.

if you have insurance right now covered by the government due to low family income- you can reapply for it until you are 21 iirc. If you dont then im afraid its better to be safe than sorry and pay that 1614 for a year.

I agree with NYU’s health insurance as a ‘rip-off’, I planned to waive my child’s insurance as there was an option to waive and save on premium but NYU has many requirements and restrictions before they even accept your own insurance.

My advice to you is before you even plan to waive, make sure you contact the NYU health center first and find out if they will accept your insurance.
I have been corresponding with Diane Tobing, the Assistant Director of Insurance & Billing, I’ve sent her a list of health insurances companies for her to check if it qualifies but all didn’t pass their requirements, in the end I gave up and decided to take the basic.

I think it’s best for you to email her direct about your ‘problem’, here’s her email address - diane.tobing@nyu.edu
so she can give you accurate information and advice.

—just my opinion!

You can receive primary care at the Student Health Center regardless of your insurance policy. If you need to see a specialist you have to use your insurance. The Mass. plan is a problem for anyone from that state who goes out of state. The student health insurance, while it may seem to be a “rip-off” to some, is considerably cheaper than any individual plan.
If you check with insurers about getting an individual policy, the NYU insurance will begin to look like a great deal. That said, if your parents have insurance through their employer you can usually use that insurance if they have out of network or out of state benefits.
