Student Health insurance

I want to waive the NYU insurance, but my private plan has a $1,500 deductible- which isn't bad considering the thousands of dollars a serious health problem can cost. I call called the health dep. today and they said that, even though it meets all other requirements, my insurance wouldn't be acceptable. Has anyone ever waived the NYU plan with a "high deductible"? Is NYU just pulling at my pocket again?

I'm not exactly clear on what occurred. Did you call NYU, and they said that you couldn't use your own insurance instead of one of the NYU plans? I made the huge mistake of having my S sign up for the NYU Comprehensive plan with the Catastrophic option - which was a decent plan for the money, but when he graduated, he was dropped from the plan, and he had to start over with Independence Blue Cross, which is the carrier that our family has, and since he had a pre-existing condition, he was forced to take a lower-level plan, and I had to pay a small fortune for him to get the plan. Basically, what I'm trying to say is that if you already have a decent health plan, you might want to consider keeping that instead of switching to NYU's plan, because once you do that, it might be difficult to then switch back to your original plan once you graduate - even if there isn't a pre-existing condition. If you do decide to take NYU's plan, then you'll want to get in touch with your current insurance carrier to make sure that you can go back to that insurance when you graduate (if you choose to), and that you won't be penalized because you were with NYU's insurance carrier as an undergraduate.

Not to confuse things, my D is at NYU, and we made sure to waive the NYU health insurance, and she's on H's plan through his employment, and that has a deductible. We waived it last year, and there wasn't any problem. Also, the NYU health insurance is Aetna, with Chickering as the administrator.

Why would you call NYU and do that!?! just fill out the stupid ambiguous 5 question waiver form on the site and you're off NYU.

It's not like i gave them my NYU ID, my social, and my first born (yet to be conceived). I just asked asked a question.
NYUmom, what was the deductible on your D's plan

Mackie45,
I sent you a pm.

$1500 deductible isn't bad at all these days (my guess is some bureaucrat is out of touch...) - mattistotle is right (if a tad undiplomatic) in his response - fill out the waiver...
