Here's the thing: I wasn't aware we had a UCSC email (and that they'd be sending IMPORTANT messages to a potentially LARGELY unused student email account...), so I did not get a chance to read the email notifying us to waive USHIP health insurance if necessary before Sept. 1. Well, now it's Sept. 20th, the day Fall Quarter bills are due, and I was wondering: Since the USHIP health insurance is $501/quarter.... Would it be possible to get a refund? I don't need it as my dad's job supplies us with "comparable health insurance". My bill is already hefty as is, and I could do without the $501 charge. When I move in to the campus on the 22nd, can I have them refund the money and cancel my ridiculously unnecessary health insurance? Thanks!

Sorry, but you are probably out of luck. The expectation is that admitted students activate and use the university email. Also, many reminders were sent by regular postal mail regarding the need to waive USHIP by the stated deadline.

You are probably out of luck, but try to go to the health insurance office and talk with the person there. I don’t remember if I went passed the deadline or not, but the woman working there was very helpful and she was able to process my refund. If not, then remember to sign the waiver for next quarter so you aren’t out an additional $500.
